About the Author
Jennifer Bray is a consultant at Cambridge Silicon Radio, the single-chip Bluetooth company. She is currently working in the group developing software for their BlueCore family of integrated circuits (ICs) . Jennifer currently holds the positions of Associate Councillor and Errata Program Manager on the Bluetooth Architectural Review Board (BARB) . She has a bachelor's degree in Physics with Microcomputer electronics, a master's degree in Satellite Communications Engineering, and a doctorate in the field of wireless communications. More recently, she gained a distinction in the Open University's Management of Technology course. Her decade of experience in communications product development includes working on Nortel and 3Com's first ATM systems, as well as wireless ATM, the first secure Ethernet repeater, ADSL to ATM gateways, FDDI, CDMA, CDMA, and Bluetooth. In addition to her communications development experience, she has worked on cutting-edge control and monitoring systems for Formula One and Indy cars, and acted as an ISO 9001 and CMM auditor advising blue-chip companies on how to improve their development and support processes. Jennifer has written and delivered technology training courses (naturally including Bluetooth), and is a frequent speaker at conferences. She co-authored with Charles Sturman Bluetooth: Connect without Cables. Gordon McNutt is a Kernel Developer for RidgeRun, Inc, responsible for porting Linux to embedded devices containing multiple processors. Bluetooth Applications Developer's Guide

This book contains an introductory overview of Bluetooth, followed by an assortment Bluetooth topics. It was written by 3 (or 4) different authors and it looks it. It is hardly a well thought out, comprehensive approach to Bluetooth applications development nor is it an applications guide as its title suggests. Prior to reading this book I read "Bluetooth 1.1 Connect Without cables" and many other Bluetooth articles and papers. I was looking for a book that would pull all the information together into a useful concise applications guide. This book does NOT accomplish that.

A comperehensive reference book

This book covers Bluetooth application development for a variety of development environments. Many expected technical problems and provisioned and guidelined for right handling are given. The format is handy and the vast usage of FAQs and Solutions' Fast Tracks improves the pactical usage of it. The 1 year upgrade buyer protection plan should ensure that buying the 1st edition isn't too early. Though Bluetooth introduction chapters are provided, the usage of some good Bluetooth description book like Jenifer Bray and Charles Sturman's Bluetooth: Connect without Cables is suggested.

Too basic for developers

As a Bluetooth baseband and applications developer, I found this book too basic to make much use out of. The only thing that I found useful is that they give some performance numbers here and there. My advice to you is to borrow this book for a quick thumb through and throw it away. The other Bluetooth book by Jennifer Bray, Bluetooth connect without cable, is even worse. You might as well read the spec itself, which is more precise and informative.

The Stoic philosopher Epictetus was born on the eastern edges of the Roman Empire in A.D. 55, but The Art of Living is still perfectly suited for any contemporary self-help or recovery program. To prove the point, this modern interpretation by Sharon Lebell casts the teachings in up-to-date language, with phrases like "power broker" and "casual sex" popping up intermittently. But the core is still the same: Epictetus keeps the focus on progress over perfection, on accomplishing what can be accomplished and abandoning unproductive worry over what cannot.

Gratifying

Even better than what I expected. Simple truths that we all should aspire to live by. Much needed reading for all living in today's world. One of my favorite lines: "It is our duty to stand by our friends in their hour of need". So few live by this standard these days. Life is so much more fulfilling when it is lived for more than just ones self.

Helped me so much

I'm truly surprised by the few negative reviews on this book. For me it was life-changing and I recommend it to anyone having trouble coping with life and with the negative self-important, difficult and the self-congratulatory bourgeoisie surrounding us all.

Stoicism is a lost art, I think, and I am glad to have been introduced to it -- the modern translation was not bothersome or annoying to me. After being introduced to the philosophy, I read some of the older English translations and was happy to find that Lebell's translation differed only in minor details and cut much of the unnecessary veribage in those older ones.

I suppose it is a matter of personal taste, one's current circumstances in life, and one's mind set. It certainly has nothing to do with (as some reviewers believe) intellectual integrity or sophistication. It is a great book. A lack of imagination or an intellectual arrogance, as far as I can see, would be the only hindrance to the enjoyment of this translation.

even watered down epictetus is a treat

I basically agree with the review below which was critical of this work as watered down epictetus. I still believe however that this work provides an excellent introduction to the ideas of epictetus in particular and stoicism in general. If this is your only exposure to stoicism, I would worry that you might conclude that this is a warm and fuzzy, feel-good philosophy rather than an extremely tough form of mental discipline where if successful you can expect to live out your life free from suffering and maybe more importantly free from the fear of suffering. Epictetus was not a new age guru but a slave of the roman empire who ended up being the teacher of that other great stoic, the emperor Marcus Aurelius ( see Gladiator movie). The fact that the slave and the emperor both choose to live their lives by the tenants of this philosophy is a more powerful recommendation than anything I could add. I was already familiar with the "Discourses of Epictetus" so I was not really bothered by the shortcomings of "the art of Living" and I have to admit that reading the discourses is quite a slog (it is basically the lecture notes of one of his students). I have given copies of the "discourses" to friends and they went unread while over the last year I have given 10 copies of "The art of living" to friends in distress and they were all read. If you find this philosophy intriguing after this introduction you can move on to the Discourses ( I'd recommend the Long translation - best of a bad lot ) and then the "Confessions of Marcus Aurelius" and "the moral essays of Seneca". "Virtue is necessary and sufficent for a good life" - a radical idea to live by in this cesspool of self-indugence that passes for the good life in 21th century America.

Mildred Pierce

Herbert Pierce has a problem: his wife Mildred told him he had to give up his lady friend or move out (Chapter 1). Bert inherited a ranch in Glendale and subdivided it to become rich. He invested in stocks on margin and was wiped out in 1929. Mildred is skilled in baking cakes. Eleven year old Veda quickly noticed her father's absence. [Is her snobbery a fatal flaw?] Their home may be in foreclosure soon. Mrs. Gessler educates Mildred about men (Chapter 2). Mildred learned about employment opportunities, and found a job as a waitress (Chapter 3). Mildred got Bert's car (Chapter 4). Mildred saw an opportunity to bake cakes for the restaurant (Chapter 5). She tries to beat some sense into Veda. Mildred studied the operation of the restaurant to learn the business for her future (Chapter 6). Wally explains how Mildred can buy property for her planned restaurant.

Mildred met Monty Beragon and became involved with him (Chapter 7). The youngest daughter gets the grippe, goes to the hospital, and dies (Chapter 8). Chapter 9 describes the operation of her small restaurant. "Salad is served first in California." Her first day was a success, people loved home-made waffles. There is a sly reference to Hoover and Roosevelt (Chapter 10). Veda will take piano lessons from an expert. The Beragon family went bust and had to sell their palatial residence in Pasadena. [Are those who are born into wealth helpless without it?] Mildred speaks her mind to Monty. The Repeal of Prohibition starts Chapter 11. Mildred started to serve cocktails and drew bigger and better dinner trade. Veda reveals her perverse nature on Christmas day. Was Veda corrupted by Monty? Mildred tells off Monty and breaks up with him.

Mildred's restaurant is doing well, she starts a branch in Beverly (Chapter 12). Then another in Laguna Beach. A wealthy Mildred incorporates as a safeguard against lawsuits. Veda devoted her whole time to music, but was not taken on as a pupil by a famous maestro. Veda grew up and spent time with her new friends (Chapter 13). Did she get into a mess of trouble? I loved the book even more than the movie because the movie was not as true to the book. However, the book I received was very old, which I didn't mind, but the last page was torn in half. Torn in half, the last page. Lucky I knew the ending.

Romance AND a real world Crime Novel wrapped in to one book.

Wow. This gets intense and the writer SERIOUSLY undertakes to write a romance taking place in a context of kidnapping, forced prostitution and human trafficking.

Not for the faint of heart. This is not your average romance!

I was just along for some hot romance but found myself compelled to read straight through to make sure my characters made it through safely.

This has some very real-world crime and suffering in it. Very shocking. I would NEVER have read it if I knew about the human trafficking issues but I am glad I was "tricked" into it!

The writing was not always smooth and polished, HOWEVER I think the author instead REALLY gives the reader an education into some of the aspects of law enforcement and human trafficking so I will forgive that as the series is very ambitious in all of the issues it undertakes!
