About the Author
Sang H. Kim is an internationally respected author of 20 martial arts books, including the widely acclaimed Vital Point Strikes and the classics Ultimate Flexibility, Ultimate Fitness through Martial Arts, Martial Arts After 40, Combat Strategy and Teaching Martial Arts. His new book Mindful Movement: Mastering Your Hidden Energy is available at Amazon.com. 

He has also created over 200 instructional video programs including Self-defense Encyclopedia, Knife-defense, Power Breathing, Junsado Training Series, and Complete Taekwondo Series. They are available through Amazon Instant Video.

He won the 1976 Korean National Championship and was named Instructor of the Year by the Korean government in 1983. As a special agent during his military service, he developed tactical combat methods for hand-to-hand and hand-to-weapon combat for covert operatives.

Sang H. Kim is the originator of MBX-12, mindful movement and deep breathing exercises, and found it clinically effective in managing stress. His research results were published in the July 2013 issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, and featured in CBS News, Huffington Post, Fox News, and others. 
Dr. Kim has a PhD in Exercise Science, and had training as a Postdoctoral research fellow at the National Institutes of Health. He also had additional training at the National Cancer Institute and the Institute of Lifestyle Medicine of Harvard Medical School. 

Dr. Kim frequently travels across North America, Europe, and Asia presenting seminars and speeches. He currently resides in the Washington, D.C. Metro area with his wife, Cynthia. He blogs at OneMindOneBreath.com.

Not bad, but not that good, either.

"It's okay" about sums it up....
There's nothing here that I've not already seen, and nothing that's specific to martial arts.
Though the stretches are all what's deemed as effective, the author does not specifically say that any given stretch IS good for martial arts - only that it MAY be good. He says, for instance, that being able to do splits is not necessarily (again, he is vague) an indicator of ability to kick high.
He is vague about the benefits and application of just about everything in the book.

If you have no other comprehensive books or videos on stretching, then this book would be great to have. Just be aware that it's just a re-hash of what's already out there....

Good collection of performance stretches.

Ironically, most of these are also ballet or ballet barre stretches. They are probably good for anyone to do, but it's good to have a book that has a bunch of pictures, with related explanations. There are some sections on warnings and safety that are good for everyone. It's big enough to have it lay open on the floor with you while you exercise.

Good book for over all directions on how to gain true flexibility. No gimmicks, no trick stretches, what it has is good advise for achieving true useful flexibility. My problem during my martial art time was/is flexibility. I tried other systems and noticed an increase in some areas and other times just plain hurt myself. This book gives a lot of options on how to gain greater flexibility and gives good guidance on how to use and mix the different techniques available according to your physical make up. No miracle changes, just good guidance for those willing to do the work.

What is up with blank pages??

This is a wonderful resource. However, my book has several blank pages! I looked up bronchitis and it said page 291, but 291 is completely blank...ugh. Has anyone else had this problem??

A Must Have!

The must have reference book if you want to try essential oils! It took me a long time to find the difference between the pocket and desktop versions online - the pocket reference has all information on oils, the desk reference also has info on other products. This book tells you everything from info about each oil (singles and blends), how to use/dilute them, and you can look up different issues to see recommended oils. Very helpful!

What a great reference book to have on hand. Not only does it help explain all singles and blends, what they are used for, how to use topically, aromatically and internally, and if they are sun-sensitive - but it also has an awesome chart in the back that makes it easy to find oils for various needs and issues (like nervous system, emotional support, cardiovascular, etc).

THEN, to make this book even MORE AWESOME, they list issues and suggested singles and blends for each issue. I've spent quite a bit of time learning and reading, checking on issues within my family and how to best use oils to help. This is truly a life-changing investment.

Fine book on an enigmatic artist

I must congratulate Mr. Brody for his in-depth examination of one the the great auteurs of cinema, a man who has consistently defied convention and created a body of work unlike anyone else in his profession.

Writing about Jean Luc Godard in an exercise in exasperation because the director is deliberately elliptical, leaving his films, methods and aesthetic open to discussion and varied interpretations. Branded, alternately, a fascist sympathizer, a communist, an anarchist and everything in between, Godard continues (to this day) to work at his own pace, exploring the themes that fascinate him without apology to critics, colleagues or even his most devoted followers and acolytes.

It is very easy to look foolish when discussing an artist as fluid, ever-evolving and unabashedly personal as Godard, but Mr. Brody's book treats its subject with finesse, subtlety, erudition and respect.

A superb meditation on a cinematic master.

if you love godard, you must have this book,by THE NEW YORKER film reviewer, richard brody.he offers an insightful biography of godard, and his influences, the reviews are in chronological order, and are MUST READS, after watching the dvds. his treatment of BREATHLESS is packed with information and astute observations. it is absolutely amazing that BREATHLESS was godard's first film. keep this book by your dvd player!

An informative overview of Godard's life and work from the beginnings to 2004, including his shorts and work for television

Jean-Luc Godard's output has been prodigious, and this massive book by Richard Brody manages to cover most of Godard's films up to 2004 and how they relate to the auteur's life. Brody, who first came to prominence as a writer for The New Yorker, has seen every one of Godard's films, and not only does he take us from Godard's early life and first feature A BOUT DE SOUFFLE up to his then most-recent feature NOTRE MUSIQUE, but he also describes Godard's many short films and television works, some of which are little known.

Proceeding chronologically through Godard's life, Brody first describes the context for how each film was made: Godard's personal relationships with the actors or screenwriters involved, where the money for the shoot was coming from, and how the shoot itself proceeded. Without getting too in-depth -- this is fundamentally a work of biography, not of very close analysis -- Brody describes the general plot and main episodes of each of the films. Brody sometimes claims that events on screen reflect events in Godard's private (usually romantic) life, and from other reviews here these claims seem to be contentious. However, that Godard's early films mirrored his relationships with Anna Karina and Maria Vlady was noted even in the 1960s by people close to Godard, and Brody is often basing himself on published sources. (Nearly all factual claims in the book are sourced, and the book ends with a lengthy section of endnotes).

Brody finds Godard's work to be interesting and often rewarding overall, but he does not believe that every film that Godard has made is of equal value, and he sometimes mentions his preferences. He feels that Godard was at an artistic nadir in the late 1960s and early 1970s with his politically radical films (the Dziga Vertov years). Later he calls Godard's early 1980s PASSION a misstep but its successor PRENOM: CARMEN a fine work. He also notes with disdain Godard's increasing anti-semitism in the 1990s.

For any cinephile wanting an overview of Jean-Luc Godard's work and the fascinating circumstances of how Godard's imagination became films, this is currently the best reference. My only regret is that the book stops in 2004, and Godard has continued to make films in the years since.

The Definitive Pediatric Neuroradiology Text

I am a pediatric neuroradiologist at a major children's hospital. On a routine basis, patients with extremely rare neurological disorders are imaged in my department. This textbook is always the first place I look when presented with a novel or unusual case, and it is often the only source I require.

Among its many strengths, this textbook is extremely well-written, perhaps the best I have ever read. As several major publishers have switched to an outline, bulleted format for textbook, it is refreshing to have a book written in coherent prose. The writing style is clear and concise. More importantly, most sections are written in a manner that feels like you are actually consulting with an expert, and benefiting from a combination of published papers and their personal experience.

This text is also quite well-organized. It must have been a daunting task to approach writing a complete textbook on the spectrum of pediatric neuroimaging. This book efficiently organizes sections into logical parts. The entire gamut of knowledge in this field is covered, starting with normal anatomy and logically proceeding to congenital anomalies, metabolic and toxic disorders, tumors, infections, etc. As I am fairly familiar with the text by this point, I can often quickly navigate to the section I require simply by virtue of the general category of the disorder.

The book is also image-rich (as it should be). The image quality is excellent, with clear and identifiable abnormalities. There are many clearly organized tables, which aid in categorizing information and making it easily searchable.

Compared with the 4th edition, the new 5th edition contains new sections, new imaging modalities (including DTI and fetal imaging most prominently), new tables, and a new organization of certain chapters. All of the changes are positive. Unlike some new editions that lose ground with new or revised chapters, every change in this text feels like an improvement. Furthermore, there are enough worthwhile changes and additions that those who own a copy of the 4th edition should purchase this new volume.

In the current age of easily accessible information through the Internet, including medical web sites, PubMed, and of course Dr. Google, textbooks in general have lost their central importance as reading room references. However, the new 5th edition of Pediatric Neuroimaging is so comprehensive, and has been so thoroughly updated with modern peer-reviewed papers and the latest imaging modalities, that it will remain relevant and useful for years to come. It belongs in the library of any radiologist whose practice includes pediatric neuroimaging, as well as neurologists, neuro-oncologists or neurosurgeons with an interest in imaging.

It's Barkovich.

What more can I say?

The book is thorough, the descriptions are as complete as can be expected for a radiology book, the images are plenty. In fact, each image has a half-page description, in thorough detail. This is certainly THE BOOK for pediatric neuroradiology. It's giant and scary, but leads you through topics with excellent organization, clear chapters, beautiful summary tables, and excellent images.

For an e-book, it needs some tweaking. The fonts don't change between chapter text and image text. It's hard to tell if I'm reading an image description or main text. It's not possible to look at an image and its description at the same time, like you could in a real book. The image quality decreases rapidly if its zoomed in. I realize these are all technical issues, and I LOVE that this book is available on kindle. The technical issues are a minor inconvenience. Having a massive book that could take out a foot if dropped, all on a small light kindle device, is incredible, and I'm very thankful to the publishers.

Just finished that book, It took a long time and I havent visited the cited articles, which are about 500 for each chapter.
This is deep and interconnected with many genetic processes which needs to be correlated in new classification.

Bargain yields many hours of enjoyable reading for the historical fiction buff.

This is truly a fantastic bargain. Having read all of these books many years ago, when they actually came out, it is a pleasure to own them all in attractive paperback binding and in common format. In the past, I could only find them in either paperback (while the old series was underway in the 1970s) and later in a variety of formats. Bookstores didn't regularly carry them, so I had to find them at libraries and borrow rather than own. Now, I have them all at last and for a very reasonable price. --- The author began the series many decades ago, long before it was popularized with the PBS series of the 1970s. The books take you into the copper mining and commerce industries of Cornwall during the period from 1783 to 1799 -- When a relatively impoverished member of the gentry, Captain Ross Poldark returns from captivity and presumed death during service with the British Army in North America in late 1783. His improbable, but highly successful marriage to a miner's daughter and rise to eminence as a miner and leader of society in Cornwall involves the novels ROSS POLDARK, DEMELZA, JEREMY POLDARK, WARLEGGEN, BLACK MOON, FOUR SWANS and ANGRY TIDE. As a new member of Parliament near the end of this series he begins to rub shoulders with some of the nobility and national political leaders. Novels begin again with the year 1810 amid the Napoleonic Wars and on to 1820 -- STRANGER FROM THE SEA, MILLER'S DANCE, LOVING CUP, TWISTED SWORD (1815 - Battle of Waterloo) and finally concludes with BELLA POLDARK (1818-20). Poldark's children are growing up and getting into adventures and scrapes of their own. Ross rises to a Baronetcy (Warleggen is only Knight), and meets with such figures as the Prince Regent and future Prime Minister George Canning. This is a great series and Graham was masterful and accurate writer of historical fiction. At $69 for the entire set, it is a super bargain.

Lost in Poldark Land

Having become addicted to the TV series, I needed to read the books. I ordered them from Eclipse. Very happy with their exceptional service. WG was a master storyteller. I have been lost in Poldark Land for days now, at times unable to clear my head. Our hero, Ross, is a man with the courage of his convictions, to be admired at anytime in history, but with the backdrop of both the American and French Revolutions, the grinding poverty of the poor which affects him greatly, incurable sickness and the constraints of society in the late 18th century, he is tested and often times found lacking. And yet, he grows, learns, moves on, but does, nonetheless, leave destruction in his wake, which is heartbreaking. The main plot and characters I expected to be engrossing, but the subplots and lesser characters are equally well developed . These people become real. I read book 7 ( 600 pages), The Angry Tide, in 2 sittings, kept in thrall by WG's genius. This is a saga to savor.....to read on a cold winter's night ...the stuff of dreams.

If you love the Poldark TV Show, you'll love this collection!

I love the Poldark TV series and wanted to get a copy of the novels that the show is based on. This collection has all 12 of the books. Both the 1970s series and the new version airing on PBS are based on the first 7 books in the 12 book series. The last 5 books chronicle the tales of Ross Poldark's descendants. Fans of the show will love the original stories that the tv episodes are based on, as well as the further adventures that happen beyond the television run.

Apache Solr is a standalone enterprise search server, exposing services for advanced text search, spatial search, faceted search, and analytics. Solr’s architecture is very fast and scalable, from working prototypes to complex distributed architecture; the internal workflow is also open to components’ customization, and integration with external tools for advanced text analysis.

This book is a practical introduction to the Solr platform that shows you how to configure your own search engine experience and embed a search engine in your website to help users navigate the data.

We start with the basics of how to use Solr and perform indexing on the default installation. You’ll be introduced to the workings of the Solr schema API, the structure of an inverted index, text analysis, and the concept of similarity. Next, we demonstrate indexing and searching with some sample data.

Moving on, you’ll learn how to use a faceted search and work with multiple entities and multicores, and how to index external data sources such as open source datasets. You’ll get to grips with basic SolrCloud concepts such as routing / shard splitting, Zookeeper, and clustering Solr for distributed searches using SolrCloud. You’ll also learn how to detect language with Tika and LangDetect.

At the end of the book, we create a project on a site for bookcrossing, which puts all the concepts together to give you the bigger picture.

About the Author
Alfredo Serafini is a freelance software consultant, who is currently living in Rome, Italy. He has a mixed education background, with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science Engineering (2003, with a thesis on Music Information Retrieval), and a professional Master's course in Sound Engineering (2007, with a thesis on gestural interface to MAX/MSP platform). From 2003 to 2006, he worked as a consultant and developer for Artificial Intelligence Research at the Tor Vergata (ART) group. During this time, he had his first chance to play with the Lucene library. Since then, he has worked as a freelancer, teaching programming languages, mentoring small companies on topics such as information retrieval and linked data, and collaborating as a software engineer on projects in the context of cultural heritage and the public sector. He is currently an enthusiast of the Scala language, graph databases, and linked open data.
