The book is largely based on interviews with men and women who talked about their often complicated love lives with wit and passion, and the book is rich in personal stories and quotations. Women were asked to discuss the nature of men and women, and men were asked to talk about women. Both sexes were questioned about their views on prostitution, concubinage, and promiscuity, as well as their definitions of love. Parents were asked for their views about marriage and child rearing (especially differences in raising boys and girls), their relations with their own parents, lovers, spouses, and friends, and their views on virginity and sexual propriety. The bluntness and articulateness of the informants about their motivations and experiences not only demonstrated that men and women viewed conjugal relationships very differently but enabled the author to specify and explore these differences in unusually interesting ways.

Excellent book, highly recommend if you want to hit the ground running

I purchased a copy of this for my morning culinary arts class because two students said they wanted to be food writers, one wants to be a restaurant critic like Ruth Reichl was and the other wants to write cookbooks. This is an excellent, excellent book. Its very practical with a lot of information they can use right now. For example, there is a whole chapter on publications they can write for which also has email addresses and telephone numbers so they can get published right away. I also liked the section on how to be a restaurant critic because it talked a lot about how to actually get the jobs and do the reviews, but the best part is the chapter on how to write about food. It also has a great list of food words.

The food blogger section gives practical information on how to get started and get visitors. It is not groundbreaking information but it is good solid information for anyone that hasn't had a blog before or who wants to get people to read their blog. My wife was an editor after college so I showed her the chapter on how to write a book proposal and she said the information was good inside information that should really help anyone who wants to get a book. She also liked the information on finding your voice and getting rid of writer's block.

I highly recommended to anyone who wants to break into food writing and write anything about food.

Useful advices for the food writers

Very useful insights and recommendations about how to write a good food review. Although a good meal can inspire you to write a good text, it is always better to use good research skills and put into words your feelings and impressions, for creating insightful reviews. It helped me a lot to improve my food writing, especially my restaurant and food reviews in general.

I GOT PUBLISHED!

I was debating what to say in this review but the only thing that counts is I GOT PUBLISHED! I borrowed a copy of this book from my sister last year and read it cover to cover. I followed all the tips, did what it said, and I GOT PUBLISHED! In case you can’t tell I am totally excited to see my name in print. I owe it to this book.

The best part of the book is the email addresses to the publications. I used them to pitch an article idea and you know how great that turned out (I’ll say it again that I GOT PUBLISHED). I don’t give anyone 5 stars because that would mean they were perfect and no one is, but this book is as close to that as it gets because I GOT PUBLISHED!

They unfortunately never consider the real motivating factor in a purchase -- WHY the prospect desires to make a change in the first place and respecting the fact that people don't buy the product...they buy the solution the product delivers! Jeff Shore takes the reader deep into this understanding -- how and why people purchase products and what it takes to create the desire and urgency for the prospect to decide to make a change (to buy!). About the Author

Jonathan Schroeder is the William A. Kern Professor of Communications at Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. He is the author of Visual Consumption (2002), co-author of From Chinese Brand Culture to Global Brands (2013), editor of Conversations on Consumption (2013), and co-editor of Brand Culture (2006), the Routledge Companion to Visual Organization (2014), as well as a special issue on "Being Branded" for the Scandinavian Journal of Management (June 2013). He is editor in chief of the interdisciplinary journal Consumption Markets & Culture. He has held visiting appointments at Wesleyan University, G�teborg University Sweden, University of Auckland, New Zealand, Bocconi University in Milan, Indian School of Business, Hyderabad, and the Shanghai International Business and Economics University.

The contents and organization of this book are derived from the published LPIC exam (101 and 102) objectives, and it was written by two LPIC 1-certified authors.

By and large, this is an introductory Linux book, with sections on installing the operating system, getting around at the command line, manipulating files, and doing essential administration of users, devices, and network connections. As such, you'll find this book rewarding even if you're not particularly interested in earning your LPIC 1 certificate. The authors present lists of options and details, and include listings of command-line input and output, to illustrate what you should see as you work with Linux (Red Hat is the demo distribution). Even if you don't plan to take the exam

Usually, I dislike certification test prep books: they don't tell you much about the topic so much as tell you how to answer certain questions for the test. For example, almost every Microsoft network-oriented test seems to require a slightly different understanding of TCP/IP than the rest of the world uses, based on the books I've seen.
This book was different. Sure, there's all the study guide/sample tests/quizzes and the other standard appurtenances used in certification books (I liked the "exam tips") but there is also a real world orientation here. The authors add "real world" notes throughout, so you can use this one when you need an answer, not just to cram for a test.
I haven't gotten to the CD, though I imagine it's got the usual stuff on it--one thing, though, is you can only use the "test engine" under Windows. Bleah. But you can get the same content under Linux in .pdf format.
The really neat thing, for me, was the "lab exercises". This is what makes a big difference: you can actually use this text to fill in the blanks in your skills, not just to pass the exam.
I've never gotten any technical certification, but this book is inspiring me. Who knows, maybe I'll find the time to get certified.

Most Complete LPIC Book

This book has more information than the other LPIC prep books. This is not hard since the main competition is Exam Cram and Nutshell, both of which are by definition succinct. There are not many LPIC books out there, so if you are studying for the exam, you probably want this most complete one.
One thing I found annoying was that chapters dealing with exam 101 and exam 102 objectives are intermingled throughout the book. One chapter includes both 101 and 102 objectives. I had already passed the 101 exam when this book came out, which partly explains my irritation. Why do authors have the rearrange there the exam objectives into their own chapters? I would prefer a book structured by exam objectives.
This book inlcudes a lot of mock exam questions, both in chapter tests and on the CD, which adds to its value for exam preparation.

Very to the point and exam centric

Having gone thru the first few chapters, I get the feeling that the book is very focussed on the exams it tries to get you thru, and is pretty to-the-point in arrangement of topics.
Also the study guides and sample questions make it helpful in getting a grip on what the exam would feel like, for someone giving the LPI exams the first time (and hopefully the last time too).
Unlike Rute's Linux user tutorial which also caters to LPI exma sbut is more focussed toward learning Linux first and passing exams second, this book is more focussed towards passing exam more than the full internals of Linux.
Having both books by your side is of course the best thing.
