About the Author
Paul Messaris is Lev Kuleshov Professor of Communication at the Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania. He teaches and does research in the area of visual communication and digital media. Recent publications include: The Visual Rhetoric of Social-Cause Photography (Visual Communication Quarterly, 2012), Visual Literacy in the Digital Age (Review of Communication, 2012), and How to Make Money from Subliminal Advertising and Motivation Research (International Journal of Communication, 2013). He was the recipient of the National Communication Association's 1996 Diamond Anniversary Book Award for "Visual Literacy: Image, Mind, and Reality" (Westview Press). His film "The Harmful Effects of Violent Movies," a satirical portrait of academic research, was nominated as Best Feature Film at the International Film Festival of England in 2008.

Never before has the tale of discovering tarot, from the sighting of a small box in a shopping mall to the creation of one of the most successful and inventive decks of all time, been recounted in such detail and with such animation. From the moment he talked his parents into buying him that first tarot deck, Valenza practiced recreating the cards. He arrived at adolescence with advanced drawing and interpretive skills. By the age of 18, he had created the first thirteen Deviant Moon tarot cards. Then, as he matured and his style began to morph and his interests changed, he put those first thirteen cards away and didn’t return to them until 2004. When he did reconnect to the deck, it began to come to life in an extraordinary way. Digitally merging the figures with his extensive photography collection, the current version of the Deviant Moon tarot was born.

Beautifully printed, this book is a visual feast as well as a stellar documentation of the creative process. After telling us his story, Valenza takes us on a personal tour through the deck. Each card is reproduced as a full page illustration. Valenza tells us how he interprets the card and gives us a peek at how the card came to life by sharing preliminary sketches and reference material with us. Tarot lovers, artists, or those who are curious about creative esoteric reality will find this a very special treasure indeed.

If you like his art you'll love this book

Didn't expect a book this big, heavy, (or nice). Most companion books are little dinky paperbacks that give you a low level description of the card and not much else. This in not one of those books....Each page is covered with a large detailed reproduction faced by a full description of the card. Certain cards and suits provide a further page or two of descriptions on where the artist got the ideas for his art and interpretations. If you like his art you'll love this book.

This isn't just a tarot book - it is a book about the creative process,art, and tarot. If you read cards you know how personal and some readings can be for both parties. This book belies the whole nature of what tarot means - sometimes what you get back is what you brought only magnified. Patrick brings his beautiful cards, draws out his descriptions, and shows some of the deeply personal aspects of his wonderful deck.

Thanks for creating the deck and creating this beautiful book. I almost feel like getting another copy to read and enjoy and keeping my first safely tucked away...definitely not a book to share as you'll probably never get it back.

Got this for my wife. She is extremely happy with it. She has used the deviant moon tarot for a few yrs now. I asked her what she liked about the book. It has a bigger version of the card and goes into more depth detail of each card.

Not the right approach for me

If I had been able to browse this book in a store I would not have purchased it. I cannot stress enough that this is not a reference book but an instructional book with downloadable exercises for the tutorials. First of all, that isn't how I learn. Second, I rarely find that such tutorials work the way they're supposed to, even when in a physical classroom with a living and breathing teacher. I'm much more at home with an informational approach that tells me why I'd use a function and walks me through the menus and options (which is the approach in David Blatner's books).
I got almost nothing out of Interactive InDesign CC, so why am I not trashing it? For one thing, the author is very knowledgeable and willing to share her knowledge in a non-pompous manner (I wouldn't say humble). She knows what she's talking about and provides a great deal of useful information. She recommends other sources, other authors' books but especially online resources. She's clear about the pros and cons of each publishing format (I so hate the can-do attitude always focusing on the positive then letting you get bogged down in all the obstructions they didn't mention).
My primary criticism of the lessons laid out is that there's not enough said in preface to each, what you should expect to do and why you'd do it. I like an overview. I prefer to be told what everything does rather than just "now click this tab". Rubin does encourage you to play around, and I did, but the lessons themselves are not exploratory.
Whether or not you learn from packaged lessons should be the deciding factor in your choice to buy this book. I made a mistake.

Very good introduction to SketchUp

This is a very good book, written by someone who really understands the SketchUp arena. The book has an introduction to modeling in Sketchup, an insightful description of rendering options, and an introduction to programming in Ruby. For me, the book could use greater emphasis on modeling and Ruby, as some of the subtleties of rendering are not matched by the depth of modeling descriptions. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed the book, found it to be extremely helpful, and read it in its entirety.

This book was not what I expected.

I rarely give a book less than three stars, but this was pretty opinionated. She gives a lot of information about birth trends in the 80's and 90's, but then goes on to belittle the experts she uses to backup her theory. I find this was more about her beliefs and experience than freebirth. She also refers to biblical principals, and then calls them myths. She gives me this angry, hippie vibe. You feel more like she's yelling at you and drawing on your emotions by telling you intense stories about extreme cases of woman being mistreated in pregnancy. In short, I wish this had been more about UC and less about her belief system (while putting down other's beliefs). I recommend Unhindered birth for someone who is considering a freebirth instead.

Absolutely amazing!!!! Bravo for Laura Kaplan. She enlighten us with the power we females have and unfortunately at some point was taken away.. The idea that women are capable of conceive, bare and deliver a baby without any outside help made complete sense when we think that women where made perfect. Delivering a child is just another bodily function that happens on it's own when the mother is emotionally, spiritually and mentally prepared and open to listen and allow her body to do the job she instinctively knows how to get it done. Wonderful and complete information to prepare any woman who is open minded and ready to take a leap of faith on ultimate freedom!

I'm a mother of three (born at home), now expecting twins. I'm also a bookworm and have read numerous books about childbirth. This one is a must have. Intelligent, illuminating and inspiring. Whether or not you are planning an unassisted birth, whether or not you have a scientific background such as mine, this book is the first one to read. It will help you to become a better mother/father.
