About the Author

Jonathan Schroeder is the William A. Kern Professor of Communications at Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. He is the author of Visual Consumption (2002), co-author of From Chinese Brand Culture to Global Brands (2013), editor of Conversations on Consumption (2013), and co-editor of Brand Culture (2006), the Routledge Companion to Visual Organization (2014), as well as a special issue on "Being Branded" for the Scandinavian Journal of Management (June 2013). Even if you don't plan to take the exam

Usually, I dislike certification test prep books: they don't tell you much about the topic so much as tell you how to answer certain questions for the test. For example, almost every Microsoft network-oriented test seems to require a slightly different understanding of TCP/IP than the rest of the world uses, based on the books I've seen.
This book was different. Sure, there's all the study guide/sample tests/quizzes and the other standard appurtenances used in certification books (I liked the "exam tips") but there is also a real world orientation here. The authors add "real world" notes throughout, so you can use this one when you need an answer, not just to cram for a test.
I haven't gotten to the CD, though I imagine it's got the usual stuff on it--one thing, though, is you can only use the "test engine" under Windows. Bleah. But you can get the same content under Linux in .pdf format.
The really neat thing, for me, was the "lab exercises". This is what makes a big difference: you can actually use this text to fill in the blanks in your skills, not just to pass the exam.
I've never gotten any technical certification, but this book is inspiring me. Who knows, maybe I'll find the time to get certified.

Most Complete LPIC Book

This book has more information than the other LPIC prep books. This is not hard since the main competition is Exam Cram and Nutshell, both of which are by definition succinct. There are not many LPIC books out there, so if you are studying for the exam, you probably want this most complete one.
One thing I found annoying was that chapters dealing with exam 101 and exam 102 objectives are intermingled throughout the book. One chapter includes both 101 and 102 objectives. I had already passed the 101 exam when this book came out, which partly explains my irritation. Why do authors have the rearrange there the exam objectives into their own chapters? I would prefer a book structured by exam objectives.
This book inlcudes a lot of mock exam questions, both in chapter tests and on the CD, which adds to its value for exam preparation.

Very to the point and exam centric

Having gone thru the first few chapters, I get the feeling that the book is very focussed on the exams it tries to get you thru, and is pretty to-the-point in arrangement of topics.
Also the study guides and sample questions make it helpful in getting a grip on what the exam would feel like, for someone giving the LPI exams the first time (and hopefully the last time too).
Unlike Rute's Linux user tutorial which also caters to LPI exma sbut is more focussed toward learning Linux first and passing exams second, this book is more focussed towards passing exam more than the full internals of Linux.
Having both books by your side is of course the best thing.

It's sometimes hard to remember that once upon a time, astrology was state-of-the-art science. It was inextricably wound up with astronomical observation, after all, and good Renaissance men often pursued both avocations. Preeminent among astrologers and natural philosophers of the 16th century was Girolamo Cardano, the subject of Anthony Grafton's scrutiny in Cardano's Cosmos. Cardano is a prime biographical subject, having lived a life of extraordinary proportions. He pursued careers in medicine, mathematics, palmistry, and writing in addition to astrology, and eventually ended up on the wrong side of the Inquisition. Forbidden to teach publicly, Cardano nevertheless continued his investigations, played politics, and wrote a wicked, tell-all autobiography.

Cardano considered himself a "master of time," and this theme winds through Grafton's narrative as it must have wound through the astrologer's life. Astrology was a tool for both predicting the future and for explaining the past.

As an astrologer--and as an autobiographer--he struggled with time, trying to uncover the hidden logic of his past and to show how accurate predictions could yield valuable therapies for his own and others' futures.... More than once, however, Cardano tried to replace this perspective with a radically different one: one in which time past and future mattered little or not at all.

An ambitious young man from Milan, lifesaving physician, traveler, mathematician, scholar of antiquity, 16th-century academic superstar and victim of the Inquisition, Girolamo Cardano embodied in one life much of what makes the Italian Renaissance fascinating to modern readers. The polymathic and resourceful Grafton (The Footnote), a Renaissance historian at Princeton, places Cardano's life and works at the center of a detailed investigation of Renaissance astrologers, their work, their beliefs, their clients and their impact. Grafton aims "to do justice to both the rationalism and the irrationality of Renaissance astrology," addressing "both its ancient sources and its modern [that is, 16th-century] social role." Seers across Europe pegged 1524 as the date for a second Noah's Flood, causing fears, then jokes, as the date approached. Famous predictors were asked for political counsel--and put themselves in danger by giving it. Cardano's early book of horoscopes made him a celebrity; his arguments with his critics illuminate the everyday impact of the Protestant Reformation. His voluminous writings, Grafton explains, "combined wide astrological interests with obsessively detailed self-revelation." Explaining how European readers regarded astrology and its rival arts, Grafton also relates the often ferociously personal intellectual battles that were fought. A writer of superb perspective and clarity, Grafton aims both at other historians and at lay readers. The latter will have to wade through some abstruse detail but will likely find the varied, informative, sometimes bizarre journey more than worth the effort. (Jan.)

By detailing the social and political circles in which Cardano traveled, Grafton (history, Princeton Univ.; The Footnote) investigates astrology's influence on 16th-century medical and political thought. As a prominent physician, Cardano often treated patients with a mix of medicine and astrology, insisting he could read a given patient's future and infer the nature of his condition based on physical observation and astrological charts. This makes for fascinating reading. Well researched and scholarly (an extensive bibliography is included), this work will be an excellent addition to academic libraries.

partial in the sense that it leaves stuff out that is maybe interesting.

It was only after finishing this that I realised that Girolamo Cardano was the same Cardan who crops up in any one volume history of mathematics in the discussion about calculating the roots of polynomials and the development of complex numbers. Cardan was not really a major mathematician, but he did more than carry a spear in an important episode (note added in proof: in fact I've just learned from the current NYRB that Richard Feynman regarded it as catalytically important for western science) - and in the end it was that role, not an entertaining memoir, that makes him important; it's a strange lapse on Grafton's part - especially since he does manage to get in that Cardan invented a neat mechanical coupling.

Still, for all that, this is a splendid exercise in historical empathy, and well worth a read.

Sincron�a es el final de Presagios con unos personajes m�s maduros. Esta vez la aventura de la protagonista es m�s y m�s profunda. En un mundo lleno de demones, brujas, magia y por supuesto el amor que no puede faltar en una historia fant�stica.

Hab�a olvidado (totalmente) pasar por ac� y decir lo mucho que am� este libro. Mi error.
Bueno, eso. Am� este libro. La trama es mucho m�s madura que en la entrega anterior, pero mantiene esos elementos que me atraparon: magia, suspenso, acci�n y romance.
