Excellent!

This story captivated me from the very first page. The writing flowed and I never had to stop and question why something was happening. Ali's writing had me reading each line as if I was watching a scene in a movie. The serial killer story was engaging and I loved how it tied to Tally. All of the "authority figures" were so great that it made me wish I could drive to the south and meet them all in person...if they were real people of course (lol). But my favorite part was the interaction between the Tally and "visions". I got goose bumps and shed a few tears. At one point the story reminded me of watching The Ghostwhisper...I loved that show! Oh and the romance between Tally and Blair was very sweet! I usually like a longer build up to intimacy but the "soul mate" angle excuses that. Do yourself a favor and read this book!

Could not put this book down!

I am a bit of a lurker when it comes to book reviews BUT I had to capture just how much I liked this book. The author quickly establishes the quirky main character and then adds lots of drama and heart stopping action, add in a love story and you have a good book. The story leaves you guessing all the way to the end. I am hoping the author will continue the story.

As always with an Ali Spooner book, I was hooked in from the first page and held spellbound until the last. This book is well written and definitely a one sitting read. I love Tally and Blair and I'm really hoping this is the first in a series. If you enjoy a good mystical murder/romance, look no further, this is excellent.

About the Author
Susan Blau was a professor and director of the Undergraduate Writing program and the Writing Center at Boston University's College of Communication. She received her BS in Education from the University of Vermont and her MA in English from the University of Connecticut, and was a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow. Her background is in linguistics, composition and rhetoric, and American Literature. She has taught writing in both English and Communication Departments and has published articles, conducted workshops, and presented papers at national conferences on the topics of teaching writing, writing across the curriculum, and writing center research and practice.

Kathryn Burak has an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a BA in English from Kutztown University. She has taught writing at North Carolina State University, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and Boston University. She is the author of a novel, EMILY'S DRESS AND OTHER MISSING THINGS, and her poetry, fiction, and essays have been published in such journals and magazines as Fiction, Missouri Review, Western Humanities Review, Gettysburg Review, Belt, and Seventeen. Her interests include teaching English to speakers of other languages.

A Tremendous Resource for the "Some-time" Counselor

As someone who often counsels as part of my job, and will be attending an upcoming Stephen Minsitry training, I rediscovered this book on my shelf, and appreciate it even more than on my first "pass-through" years ago. The authors celebrate the thousands (maybe millions) of people who are thrust into counseling roles on a daily basis, so they charge ahead and describe positive actions we can take to make our "supportive counseling" role work to the counselee's advantage. The authors have numerous descriptions of problem behaviors that provide a real reference for the lay person, but the real strength in the book is the care they take in illustrating the relationship between the counselor and counselee. The chapter on "Hard-bought Wisdom" is alone worth the price of the book. I'm glad to see that it is back-ordered; there's hope that it won't permanently be out of print. If you are a part-time counselor, I highly recommend this book.

Sersiouly, this just isn't OK.

I really don't understand how a book could be produced with this many mistakes. To be fair, I'm not sure if I've ever had the first edition of a text/review book before, but this thing is rife with glaring errors. And here's the bad news: I'm really, really not that great a med student. So if I'm seeing THESE mistakes, what else is there to be found?

I get that one or two mistakes are going to get through, especially in a fact-heavy volume like this. But there's some pretty serious conceptual screw-ups here, too. You've been warned...

Good comprehensive Review

I used this book along with my organ systems themed pathology course to get a good review of the anatomy, embryology, physiology and pharmacology involved with that specific organ system. The book has errors in it, but nothing overly major, and the errata includes most of them. Additionally, it helped me to read more critically, and conscientiously, paying attention to what I was reading (You can submit the errors for a potential gift card). I liked that it was more text and explanation, and filled in many of the holes left out in first aid for step 1. Overall, it was a great review resource that I would use again.

Great Review book -- all med students should have this!

I have my fair share of review books -- First Aid USMLE 2009, the entire BRS series, Goljan's Rapid Review Path, etc -- but if i had to choose 1 book to use, I would pick First Aid: Organ Systems. I was never a big fan of the format of the first aid books; however, organ systems is written in paragraph form, rather than outline form. It's easy to follow and a great book to use along with regular course work. The margins are nice and wide which allows for annotation. Yes, it's true there are some errors, but there is a correction list published on the First Aid website (its 3 pages long, and most of the corrections are grammatical errors -- it took me an hour to make all the corrections in the book). I personally think all medical students should invest in this review book.
