my favorite from Hesse

When I read about this book, way back when I read a lot of classics, the essay I read said this was Herman Hesse's least important book and the characters weren't"real". Curious, I read it in one sitting and loved it. Typical!
I saw this available on Kindle and thought I'd read it again and see if, like many books I read in my twenties, this one no longer pleased me. Surprise! Still like it a lot. Are the characters real? They are in the sense that people are still like this: they still do stupid things, feel sorry for themselves, fall in love with their best friend's girl, create music, don't understand their parents and commit suicide sometimes. And those real actions make them real enough for me.
If you don't mind a book without car chases, serial killers or sex give this a try.

Hesse is my favorite author. Each of his works has touched me in some way. My only regret is that I didn't start reading his books earlier in life. However, maybe I would not have appreciated them as much without a boat load of life experiences.

Fine Writer Well Focused

An excellent alternative to reading the first few chapters of a survey of US History. Not a substitute for reading Taylor's classic American Colonies, but a cogently organized, well-written summary of what the last generation of historians has taught us about the European colonization of the Northern half of the Western Hemisphere (with a little on the Pacific Islands as a bonus). The chronology and bibliographic essay at the end are a welcome feature. Can be read in two or three hours tops. Makes me interested in sampling the rest of the Very Short Introduction series.

This is as good as it gets when it comes to "short" history

This is as good as it gets when it comes to "short" history. Taylor is succinct without being abstract. This short volume of early American history is highly readable, serious, and informative. It gives a precise overview of colonial history, highlighting causal links to important developments. It is well organized and up-to-date in its research and bibliography: A great way to start learning about this topic or, as in my case, to review and update my knowledge of this historical epoch. I highly recommend it.

Nice Way to Review

I enjoyed this shortened version of Alan Taylor's larger text. It was pretty easy to follow, not too dry. I would recommend this to someone who would like a brief refresher course of Colonial America, and it would also be a good resource for AP US high school students as a summer assignment.

This book is not completely useless. It does tell you something about models that are used in finance. But the title misleads: there is a lot of description of models, but not much on estimation and inference procedures.
There is a general air of editorial sloppiness in a combination of factual errors, grammatical slips, awkward language and inscrutable logic. For example, on p.36 a process is defined to be I(1) iff its first difference is a weak white noise. And on p.172 there is this: "It is likely the asset prices to [sic] follow a nonstationary process, whereas the dividends and the excess gains are stationary processes." Huh? In the discussion of the consumption-based CAPM money and a price level are inexplicably included. Things of this kind recur through out.

A great introduction to financial econometrics

The book introduces a number of topics that usually can be only found in papers. For example, the treatment of the econometrics of derivatives, although not very extensive, is excellent. In this regard the book is vastly superior to Cambell and Lo's book. Overall, the book covers a wealth of topics in very accesible and concise manner. Probably, the best introduction to modern financial econometrics for practitioners.

Holland loses old friends, encounters vicious discrimination, and is thrown out of the house by her hysterical mother. She finds help at the local Gay Resource Center, however, and begins to look forward to attending a local college after high school, with Cece by her side. Peters knows how to tell an intriguing story. However, while both teens are likable, believable characters, the confidence with which Cece proudly proclaims her sexual orientation at school strains credibility. This aside, the antigay slurs, viciousness, and prejudice the girls endure certainly leave an indelible impression. Peters's message may be heavy-handed at times, but, overall, this is a well-written and thought-provoking novel.

Gr. 9-12. In these novels about first love, a high-school girl falls hard for another girl and faces the complicated pain of coming out to family, friends, and to one's self. In Gravel Queen, the author's debut novel, Aurin explores her first gay relationship, and finds that her best friend, a glamorous, possessive drama queen, is jealous. Benduhn focus on Aurin's self-discovery and friendships, closing the novel before Aurin tells her family what's going on. In Keeping You a Secret, model high-school senior Holland, who has a boyfriend, develops an overwhelming crush on Cece. The girls fall passionately in love and a tragic coming-out story ensues. Holland finds herself homeless and alone, except for Cece and a new gay support system.

Both novels, written in first-person, are filled with believable inner monologues and finely tuned contemporary dialogue. Benduhn includes some interesting cinematic references related to Aurin's filmmaking aspirations, but some of her descriptions are over-the-top. Peters' story and characters are more developed. Both books are romantic and layered, and many teens, particularly those with fluid sexual identities, will recognize the questions: Do you have to kiss someone to be gay? What do fantasies mean? Absolutely Amazing

This is an absolutely amazing book about teens, sexuality, and society. Peters does a wonderful job in capturing the issues surrounding coming out for young people, and deals with them courageously and realistically. She delivers a story of one girl who is supported by her parents and another who is disowned. One girl who is openly and comfortably gay, and another who is closeted and dealing with her newly-realized sexuality. These girls find comfort in each other as they deal with internal and external forces. If a book like this had been available 20 years ago, I might have made different choices in my own life. I might even have my own pre-teen daughters read it.

The book is well-written, thoughtful, and easy to read. I haven't read a story this good in a very long time.

Recommended for anyone of any age who is dealing with issues of sexuality... accompanied with a Coke and a bowl of Bing cherries...

Bullies be gone!

I really enjoyed this book & I flew through it. Keeping You A Secret was really eye opening with the LGBTQ community and the struggles they go through. I think people need to accept them more and welcome them with open arms. They're the same as straight people. They love just like we do. Who cares if it's of the same gender? That's bulls*** that they get bullied for it. The discrimination needs to stop.
I'd recommend this book to anyone. Especially the bullies. Maybe it'll open your eyes up to how others really feel & to stop being a jerk.
