I wish I'd known this book was targeted toward people who write self-help books. Not particularly useful for a fiction writer.

That's not the reason for my low rating, however. I did try to read it, figuring it wouldn't hurt to learn about a different kind of writing. It was the blatant self-promotion that put me off, the realization that this is nothing more than a glorified advertisement that was written in a single weekend. Waste of time, and I'm guessing her "incubator" program is a waste of money, too. There are plenty of great writing books out there that DON'T try to manipulate you into purchasing additional services.

Who are you writing for?

I've written and published a few books but took them offline because I wasn't able to reach an audience. Writing a book is one thing--getting it into the hands your intended reader is quite another. One important lesson that The Difference teaches is about knowing who is the ideal recipient of your message and how to reach them. If you had a love letter to write to just one person, your book should be that letter. This is exactly what Angela teaches in this book.

supportive and motivating

The author did a great job giving the feel of a friend, or of someone who genuinely has your best interest in mind. Despite the fact I felt they could have toned down the self promo just a bit, I felt the insight and guidance worth the read. Some self promotion is expected and for sure, admirable as I think it takes courage to stand tall. But it's a balance as with anything. The flip side is the value of this book which is the fact that I haven't read a book with this angle before - nurturing the soul of the author as opposed to nurturing just the craft itself. My Kudos to the author in thinking intuitively and crafting the self awareness they have to be successful.

Jaw-Dropping Late 40s Designs and Comprehensive How-To

If you can somehow get past the jaw-dropping draped designs of the late 40s pictured throughout this book, it becomes the great how-to of clothing creation it was meant to be.

I come back to it again and again to gaze upon the intricately draped beauties of the late 40s and marvel at the complexity and sheer genius of these designs, a craft I believe that was never duplicated as it was done then. It was a style period I feel, that upended the boring utilitarianism of the earlier 40s and continued until the early 50's which preceded the monotonous samenes of the "wiggle" skirts and full skirts.

This book offers chapters on basic blouses and skirts, showing both a draped and a flat pattern method of creating.

The sleeve chapter is such a wealth of inspiration, it's hard to choose just one to attempt! My personal favorite is in the chapter entitled "Sources of Design" where some astounding draped garments are pictured with their corresponding flat pattern layout. Therein lies a dress having "deep cowl folds produced by placing the hip seams on the bias." WOW! Some of these designs, although all have a flat pattern diagram, are not for the faint-hearted....they are fairly complex in their execution but if tackled patiently could end up being a greatly rewarding accomplishment!

Fitting encompasses yet another chapter, showing examples of bad fit/good fit/problem solved. There is also a chapter on collars and later, sources of design showing mostly whole garments.

For the fashion historian/afficionado, this is an invaluable book that will please and inspire!

This book provides very clearly written and understandable instructions on how to create flat patterns. It includes also explanations on possible mistakes that may occur and what happens from those mistakes.
The drawings and diagrams are well-chosen to illustrate the processes and instructions from the text.

Good basic color manual

There are many good things about this book, but what I mainly use it for are the color charts in the back of the book, in order to create my own colors. At the same time, the book is well worth reading. Examples of color theory, that is, what color goes with which, are provided so that you see it in action, so to speak, not only in side by side examples, but in some famous...and not so famous...artwork. As well, examples are provided from nature. Further, flesh color examples are provided...with the name of the paint they are referring to. They show a Van Gogh painting where he used almost nothing but red and green to paint the face. Gray, white and black are explained, sometimes tough subject matter for artists. And if that weren't enough, there is shown the difference between, for example, burnt umber by Golden, by Liquitex, and by other brands. They are very different! This is a book worth having, worth reading and worth referring to. If you are an artist, get it!

Man this is a great book. My wife is into painting, and she borrowed a copy from her sister, and when I saw it, I really wanted one for myself, since I am a klutz with color. It explains every aspect of combining various paints to get the colors you want. It is very thorough and a big book. Well worth the modest price.

This is the type of book that you start reading and don't put down until you are at the end. While giving out a wealth of information, you are not overwhelmed with too much to fast. And what you do learn is very understandable and giving to you in such a manner that it is very easy to remember. This book brought key elements that I have heard of in several different books, but that I had not been able to connect the dots.
