Implementing Database Security and Auditing, by Ron Ben Natan

This book is about database security and auditing. You will learn many methods and techniques that will be helpful in securing, monitoring and auditing database environments. It covers diverse topics that include all aspects of database security and auditing - including network security for databases, authentication and authorization issues, links and replication, database Trojans, etc. You will also learn of vulnerabilities and attacks that exist within various database environments or that have been used to attack databases (and that have since been fixed). These will often be explained to an “internals” level. There are many sections which outline the “anatomy of an attack” – before delving into the details of how to combat such an attack. Equally important, you will learn about the database auditing landscape – both from a business and regulatory requirements perspective as well as from a technical implementation perspective.

* Useful to the database administrator and/or security administrator - regardless of the precise database vendor (or vendors) that you are using within your organization.
* Has a large number of examples - examples that pertain to Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, Sybase and even MySQL..
* Many of the techniques you will see in this book will never be described in a manual or a book that is devoted to a certain database product.
* Addressing complex issues must take into account more than just the database and focusing on capabilities that are provided only by the database vendor is not always enough. This book offers a broader view of the database environment - which is not dependent on the database platform - a view that is important to ensure good database security.

Review
"It's been said that everyone has their 15 minutes of fame. You certainly don't want to gain yours by allowing a security breach in your database environment or being the unfortunate victim of one. Information and Data are the currency of On Demand computing, and protecting their integrity and security has never been more important. Ron's book should be compulsory reading for managing and maintaining a secure database environment." Bob Picciano, VP Database Servers, IBM.

"Today, databases house our 'information crown jewels', but database security is one of the weakest areas of most information security programs. With this excellent book, Ben-Natan empowers you to close this database security gap and raise your database security bar!" Bruce W. Moulton. CISO/VP, Fidelity Investments (1995 - 2001)

"Let's start with a simple truth about today's world: If you have a database and you make it available to customers, employees, or whomever over a network, that database will be attacked by hackers -- probably sooner rather than later. If you are responsible for that database's security, then you need to read this book. No other single source covers all of the many disciplines and layers involved in protecting exposed databases, and it especially shines in synthesizing all of its concepts and strategies into very practical and specific checklists of things you need to do. I've been an Oracle DBA for 15 years, but I'm not embarrassed to admit that five minutes into Chapter One I was making notes on simple measures I had overlooked." -- Charles McClain, Senior Oracle DBA, North River Consulting, Inc.

"In just over 400 pages the author manages to quite thoroughly cover a wide variety of database security topics. Whether you want to learn more about encryption, authentication and password control, or access control, this book provides help." - dbazine.com, Craig Mullins

"I learned some new information that I would not have known if I hadn't been exposed to it by this book." - C.J. Kelly Computerworld

Excellent Database Security Implementation guide
By Audrey Semple
It's is compact; not a huge tome which could be off-putting. Loves the fact that examples are included for the various DBs that are out there: Oracle, SQL, DB2, Sybase and MySQL. Also like the way the points are bulletted, the summary at the end of each chapter as well as an explanation of a relevant topic mentioned in the chapter e.g. C2 Security and C2 Auditing in Capter 1 and Kerberos in Chapter 4.

The Best Resource Available on Database and Data Access Auditing
By Data Guy
If compliance and auditing are on your agenda, then Ron Ben Natan's book on database security and auditing merits your attention. In this day-and-age of computer viruses, hacking, and governmental regulations, database security and auditing is a subject of paramount importance. And Implementing Database Security and Auditing attacks the subject with a vengenance.

In just over 400 pages the author manages to quite thoroughly cover a wide variety of database security topics. Whether you want to learn more about encryption, authentication and password control, or access control, this book provides help.

The book is useful for both DBAs and security administrators, giving each a better view of the world where the disciplines of database management and security management meet. Even better, the book offers many examples and guidelines for multiple environments. Whether you use DB2 on AIX, MySQL on Linux, Oracle on Unix, or SQL Server on Windows, Ben Natan's book provides useful guidance.

Are you curious to know more about SQL injection attacks? Learn what they are and why they are dangerous in this book. What about buffer overflows? Maybe you've read about them in the IT press, but those "newsy" pieces rarely delve into the depth required to understand and prevent attacks using these methods. This book offers that depth.

Chapter 7, "Using the Database to do Too Much," is particularly useful. In this chapter the author discusses some of the things not to do if you want to properly secure your database environment. You can save yourself a lot of trouble by reading and following these useful suggestions.

I think my favorite section of the book is the final three chapters. Here is where the author tackles the meaty topics of regulatory compliance and database auditing. New governmental rules and regulations are being introduced constantly and their impact on database administration is not clearly understood by many heads-down, techies. This book will give you a clearer understanding of laws such as GLB, Sarbanes-Oxley, and HIPAA -- and lend guidance on how to adapt your database environment in order to comply with these laws.

All-in-all Implementing Database Security and Auditing is a useful and timely publication that most DBAs would do well to read and embrace.

How can we secure our databases?
By James F. Koopmann
The preface clearly states that this book is a guide on implementing security and auditing for database environments Lays out who should read the book, basically administrators, auditors, security professionals, or any one involved with operational ownership of databases.

After reading the book I actually felt that there are so many vulnerabilities that effect every part of an IT shop that this book is a must read for developers, architects, and management as well. Often it is the way systems are architected and coded that bring out the vulnerabilities and allow would-be hackers in.

Ron really has hit a great balance between readability and information.

The book isnt just a text or reference book but also entertained me.

Unwelcome Strangers: American Identity and the Turn Against Immigration, by David M. Reimers

Is it time for America―a country founded and forged by immigrants―to shut its doors? After decades of liberal policies that welcomed ever greater numbers of immigrants, America is seeing a surge in anti-immigration sentiment. Congressional debates, polls, incidents of violence, and the growing strength of anti-immigration groups all indicate a growing nativism. In Unwelcome Strangers, David M. Reimers enters into the emotionally charged immigration debate, looking at all sides of the argument. Who are the nativists, and are any of their views legitimate? This balanced investigation traces the history of American attitudes toward immigration and offers a new perspective on the current crisis.

The core of this book uncovers the heated arguments of the anti-immigration forces, from environmental groups that warn against the consequences of overpopulation, to economic concerns that immigrants take jobs away from Americans, to assimilationist fears that newcomers―especially from Latin America, and Asia―threaten American culture. Reimers questions these arguments while acknowledging that pro-immigration forces hurt their position by not considering whether the United States can actually absorb one million immigrants a year. Reimers sees potential solutions in English language instruction for newcomers, greater accountability of sponsors, and government intervention to counterbalance the negative economic impact some immigrants have on poor communities. Reimers outlines the many bureaucratic and practical challenges faced by the INS, from determining who gets political asylum to screening applicants for criminal records.

Reimers charts the history of U.S. immigration policy and public reaction to newcomers, from the Puritan colonists to World War II refugees. The rise of nativism that began in the 1880s culminated with the highly restrictive immigration policies of the 1920s. Reimers shows how immigrant groups have historically been targeted―whether for ethnic, racial, or religious reasons. Quakers, Catholics, and Jews were the focus of anti-immigrant sentiment as were Germans, Irish, Italians, and Asians. This history of prejudice throws light on later developments in immigration history, such as the public response to the Cuban refugee crisis, the growing proportion of Third World immigrants, and the relationship between legal and illegal immigration, right up to the battles over California's proposition 187―which proposed to restrict public assistance for aliens and their children―and major congressional legislation passed in 1996 to deal with immigration.

Review

Reimers provides a useful survey of the current state of federal immigration law and enforcement policies as well as proposed changes in the existing regulations.

(Boston Book Review)

Review

Reimers makes a powerful case against the racist and xenophobic nature of American nativism over the past century.

(Donald M. MacRaild, University of Sunderland Immigrants and Minorities)

Reimers has undoubtedly lit the way for scholars and lay citizens alike to a more fruitful discussion of contemporary immigration and the newest American nativism.

(Matthew Frye Jacobson Reviews in American History)

No other volume as clearly and concisely sorts out the environmental, cultural, and economic arguments offered by contemporary anti-immigration minions. No other historical detective reveals how often nativists are linked by common sources of right-wing funding. Unwelcome Strangers is required reading for historians and current policymakers, alike.

(Alan M. Kraut, American University)

Reimers has written a definitive history of our latest anti-immigrant movement, which, he argues persuasively, was as racial and as xenophobic as all other nativist movements of the past, except that the proponents this time tried to hide their true feelings under their supposed concern for the environment and taxpayers' burden.

(Peter Kwong, Hunter College)

Reimers's judicious and balanced treatment in Unwelcome Strangers can only add to his reputation as our finest historian of recent and contemporary immigration.

(Roger Daniels, University of Cincinnati)

About the Author

David M. Reimers is professor of history at New York University and the author of many books, including Still the Golden Door: The Third World Comes to America, and (with Frederick Binder) All the Nations Under Heaven: An Ethnic and Racial History of New York, both published by Columbia.

Mental Models: Towards a Cognitive Science of Language, Inference, and Consciousness (Cognitive Science Series), by P. N. Johnson-Laird

Mental Models offers nothing less than a unified theory of the major properties of mind: comprehension, inference, and consciousness. In spirited and graceful prose, Johnson-Laird argues that we apprehend the world by building inner mental replicas of the relations among objects and events that concern us. The mind is essentially a model-building device that can itself be modeled on a digital computer. This book provides both a blueprint for building such a model and numerous important illustrations of how to do it.

In several key areas of cognition, Johnson-Laird shows how an explanation based on mental modeling is clearly superior to previous theory. For example, he argues compellingly that deductive reasoning does not take place by tacitly applying the rules of logic, but by mentally manipulating models of the states of affairs from which inferences are drawn. Similarly, linguistic comprehension is best understood not as a matter of applying inference rules to propositions derived from sentences, but rather as the mind's effort to construct and update a model of the situation described by a text or a discourse. Most provocative, perhaps, is Johnson-Laird's theory of consciousness: the mind's necessarily incomplete model of itself allows only a partial control over the many unconscious and parallel processes of cognition.

This an extraordinarily rich book, providing a coherent account of much recent experimental work in cognitive psychology, along with lucid explanations of relevant theory in linguistics, computer science, and philosophy Not since Miller, Galanter, and Pribram's classic Plans and the Structure of Behavior has a book in cognitive science combined such sweep, style, and good sense. Like its distinguished predecessor, Mental Models may well serve to fix a point of view for a generation.

When Logic Fails
By John M. Ford
Philip Johnson-Laird's reformulation of psychology's approach to human reasoning came at an important time in the history of cognitive science. Cognitive psychology had edged behaviorism off of the stage and made the study of thinking once again respectable. Cognitive models of the mind were heavily influenced by analogies to computer architecture and the logical structure of software programs. This approach began to reach its limits, as research began to show that human beings reasoned in qualitatively different--and not necessarily inferior--ways than deductively-driven software.

Instead of deductive logic, argues Johnson-Laird, human reasoning is based on the construction and evaluation of mental models of the world around us. We build these models using information from our senses, but also assumptions and long-term knowledge from memory. The book describes the principles of model construction and makes an extended argument for the superior explanatory power of this approach compared to deductive reasoning. It integrates findings from a broad range of topics, including errors made using syllogistic reasoning, advantages experts have when reasoning about their areas of expertise, human ability to reason with incomplete information, and our extensive use of spatial metaphor to organize knowledge.

The research described in this book played a significant role in easing cognitive science away from overreliance on the computer metaphor for human reasoning. It is thorough and accessible to readers with an introductory background in cognitive psychology. Interested readers may want to continue with the author's latest book-length exploration of this topic in How We Reason.

Great Planning Tool
By bobinmichigan
I have several emergency preparedness books at home that I have been reading to establish my family emergency plan. I found Dr Williams workbook very complete and easy to follow. He has put a lot of thought into the preparation and presentation of the material. I found several areas that I needed to strengthen in my existing plan that the other books didn't cover. This workbook can be used as a stand alone, or can be combined with Dr Williams book "When All Plans Fail" for more in-depth coverage. I would highly recommend this to anyone seriously preparing their family emergency protocol. I especially liked the Christian messages woven into the material.

Not your average textbook!
By Krissimarie
Short, sweet and to the point! .....Just like media writing is supposed to be. Even if I wasn't reading this book for a college course, I'd benefit from the content anyway. Each chapter is relevant for writers of all varieties. From radio broadcast script-to blogs-to news print articles, this book has the "how to's." However, I'd also recommend buying a copy of the, "Associated Press Stylebook and Briefing on Media Law 2013" to accompany this contemporary textbook-ish. All writers, or want-to-be writers, should own a copy of AP Stylebook (ISBN: 978-0-465-08299-5) even though this text, Reaching Audiences, does give relevant examples and rules of AP style within chapters.

Good Starter Book for Writers
By Erin
Good, basic information about writing for the media. I feel as though this is a great starting point for someone with a goal to do freelance writing. At some points in the book I felt like it wasn't quite getting to the point but for the most part is was very helpful.
