Very Worthwhile
By Fmaxrobs
This book vy handy for those already knowing a goodly number of German words and who want to go further. General headings group together words that would apply under such headings.
German's subtleties might surprise English-speakers. We English-speakers have one main word "use". We might say "utilize" if full of prunes, but little else works. Apparently, German has several words for our "use".
The unwary think English-speaking users of Latin cognates sound SOOOOO learned, but those who know better think they sound stuffy and stiff. Frequent Latin cognate users sound very pretentious in German. German offers no such dodge, but English-speakers who know Latin or Greek borrow-words may note that many abstract German words are built up from German roots that seem to have been substituted for Latin roots. Example, English word 'telephone' comes from two Greek words meaning 'distance' and 'sound' or 'voice' One German word for 'telephone' is "Fernsprecher' from two words meaning 'distance' and 'speaker'. Apparently, in the 1870's the new Germany nationalized many words that in Goethe's day were borrowed from Latin or Greek. The Germans also use "Telefon'. They likely use Telefon only because it is also French, from which German nows borrows most.
The Norwegian reviewer correctly notes that this is no book for new learners Its print, however, was easy for me to read. Being Norwegian, should give him a bigger leg-up with German than any native English-speaker has.

Very Handy Little Book
By Steve Irons
You won't learn how to speak German for this book, but that's not the point. Rather, this book is mainly for those who already have a fair amount of German knowledge, but who want to have a quick, handy, but extensive guide to the various words they will need in actually using the language.
In that respect if succeeds admirably. Lists are arranged thematically for easy look-up. In short, essential.

For reading this book you have to have very good sight of eyes because of its size and the size of fonts. That is ok if you use a suitable pare of glasses. You can rarely find an example sentence for 10000 words in this book and for myself I decided to put it aside for maybe ever. After 5 days of ordering I received it in my letter box in Norway.
