About the Author
Alan Karras (University of California, Berkeley) studies the eighteenth-century Atlantic world and global interactions more broadly concerning illegal activities like smuggling. Karras is the Associate Director of International & Area Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and has served as chair of the College Board’s test development committee for world history and as co-chair of the College Board's commission on AP history course revisions.

Elizabeth Pollard is a historian of the ancient world, in particular of Roman and Greek civilizations, and her research interests cross the disciplinary and methodological boundaries between history, religious studies, classics, and women's studies. Her pedagogical interests include the effectiveness of web-based technology and world history in teaching, learning, and writing about ancient history. She teaches the world history survey regularly, and serves on the executive committee of the World History Association.

Clifford Rosenberg is associate professor of European history at City College and the Graduate Center, CUNY. He specializes in the history of modern France and its empire and is the author of Policing Paris: The Origins of Modern Immigration Control Between the Wars. He is currently studying the spread of tuberculosis between France and Algeria since the mid-nineteenth century.

Robert Tignor (Princeton University) is Professor Emeritus and the Rosengarten Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at Princeton University and the former three-time chair of the history department. With Gyan Prakash, he introduced Princeton’s first course in world history nearly twenty years ago. Professor Tignor has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in African history and world history and written extensively on the history of twentieth century Egypt, Nigeria, and Kenya. Besides his many research trips to Africa, Professor Tignor has taught at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria and the University of Nairobi in Kenya.

Anarchism is currently undergoing a worldwide revival, in many ways replacing Marxism as the theoretical and moral center of new revolutionary social movements. It has, however, left little mark on the academy. While anarchists and other visionaries have turned to anthropology for ideas and inspiration, anthropologists are reluctant to enter into serious dialogue. David Graeber is not. These essays, spanning almost twenty years, show how scholarly concerns can be of use to radical social movements, and how the perspectives of such movements shed new light on debates within the academy.

David Graeber has written for Harper’s Magazine, New Left Review, and numerous scholarly journals. He is the author or editor of four books and currently lives in New York City.

David Graeber is an anthropologist and activist who currently teaches at the University of London and has been active in direct-action groups, including the Direct Action Network, People's Global Action, and Anti-Capitalist Convergence. Creative, Thoughtful and Brilliant

Possibilities is really the best of scholarship: an incredibly smart, well-read person putting together different strands of thought to create a unique perspective. Noone writing today is better at explaining anarchism and applying anti-hierarchical, anti-authoritarian thinking to a wide range of subjects; knowing that the author is also an activist only enhances his arguments. Can easily be read (and enjoyed) by non-academics. A truly wonderful book.

brain-melts: 4 and counting

Having rushed through the first part of the book (of 3) i feel now compelled to come back and read it again, just to make sure i understood it correctly. Not that the ideas themselves are complicated, but i feel i haven't fully grasped the breath of consequences and interpretations that they provide.

Which is to say: Graeber's book is at once extremely original and extremely relevant. I am pretty sure that i will not be able to face salary-work the same way again after reading his analysis of modes-of-production --- not that i had never heard that a job is a form of slavery, but his arguments make the connection much deeper, albeit more subtle too.

This is no sissy science, trying to make acceptable claims with defensible arguments. Graeber reinterprets classical arguments as he sees fit. But in the end, what we get is actually a clearer idea of society, both more aware of history and more technologically astute than your usual social scientist.

Finally, he claims that his aim with those texts is to keep possibilities open, and i am pretty sure he achieves it.

Great for beginners

This wonderful little book is a gentle introduction to Kanban by Marcus Hammarberg and Joakim Sunden. It explains the theory behind flow-based processes and provides a ton of practical implementation tips on everything from visualising work to how to properly take out a sticky note.

The first part deals with the basic principles of Kanban, using visual boards to show and manage work in progress, managing queues and bottlenecks and distributing and limiting work across team members. The second part explains how to manage continuous process improvement, how to deal with estimation and planning and how to define and implement different classes of service.

My impression is that this book will be most useful to people completely new to Kanban, who are investigating the concepts or starting to adopt this process. If you already use Kanban, you might find the chapters on managing bottlenecks and process metrics interesting.

Compared to David Anderson’s book, Kanban in Action is more approachable for beginners. Each important concept is described with lots of small, concrete examples, which will help readers new to Kanban put things into perspective, but also reinforce the message that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Anderson’s book goes in more depth to explain the theory behind the practice, and this book has more practical information and concrete advice on topics such as setting work in progress limits, managing different types of items on a visualisation board and choosing workflow metrics. If you’re researching this topic or starting to implement Kanban, it’s worth reading both books.

What you need to get started with Kanban

This book is a great introduction that would drive you smoothly into the world of Kanban.
This is a real "in action" book: every time a new concept is introduced everything is explained using simple examples instead of going down in the theory behind it and the reader is provided with lots of practical tips (many from real life cases) on how to apply it.
This makes it very easy to follow for who's new to the topic, but even if you already had some experience with it you could find some new trick to try.
Last chapter was a pleasant surprise: the authors collected some game you could use to explain Kanban and its principles to the people you work with. Knew some of them already but it's nice to see those mentioned: improving the way we can teach things to others is a topic that never get's enough attention.

Good well rounded easy to grasp.

Been using Kanban awhile and still fleshed out some of the gaps in my experience. Mentioned the online tools I've been using. Lots of illustrations/examples and some excellent advice on peeling off stickies so they remain flat! Talks about where Kanban overlaps into other areas of software development from agile to testing to reporting and realizes it's not the only method in the toolbox while still exhibiting that it's the best.
