For C&C fans only

If you are not a fan of C&C then I would have to agree with all of the other reviews here and say that the book was pretty bad. Confusing dialect at times, and the sidestory about the reporter was pointless. Also, if you hadn't played C&C and weren't familiar with the system, you'd get completely lost at times.
However, if you are a fan of C&C then you will probably enjoy it. I haven't played C&C 3 yet (which is what the book is based off of) but having a background of the game will probably make it more enjoyable, since C&C games are notorious for B line actors trying to make a movie. If you like the game, it's worth the read. If you aren't a huge fan, forget it.

My son couldn't put it down

Although the reviews for this book weren't that good from other people, I realized that since this book was written for a tweener I was willing to take a chance and buy it for my son. He loved it!!! He is not a big fan of reading books, but this book captivated him from the beginning. When I asked him what he liked about it the most he said that it was a Command and Conquer book....period. I watched him carry this book around throughout his Christmas vacation in case he was given an opportunity to read it. A book this size would have normally taken him a month of reading only 30 minutes a night a couple days a week. However, he finished this book in about a week and a half. He also said he wanted to find out if there were any more books like this available. Sure, it might not win a prize for best written or anything, but if it can hold the attention of a 12 year old "non-book reading" boy and make him excited to read another, then I say it is a GREAT BUY.

Not what i expected

After reading some of the negative reviews on here, i figured i'd pick the book up anyway since i'm a fan of the series. Overall, it's ok i guess. Nothing great. It is not what i expected.

I was hoping to read about some of the epic battles played through in the game, more emphasis on the tech and equipment, more to do with Kane's mysterious ways and Nod's motives or at least some backstory of the game itself. Instead, the book seems to focus more on people and personal relationships (the reporter's parts, which sometimes serve as a window to the C&C universe) and giving a grunt's view of the few battles (seen from a private who is quickly promoted by default when his buddies die and he gets lucky). The battle scenes are also underwhelming.

Most of the book seems to be bogged down by aforementioned personal moments and the battles seem rushed and not very fleshed out. There are also large holes in between some sections. At the end of one chapter, there is talk of a battle and the next chapter picks up right in the middle of a battle. I wouldnt say it's hard to follow, it just seems poorly put together.

And then there are the percieved inconsistencies in unit types and certain events. It's been a while since i played C&C 3, but i never remeber Juggernauts (artillery units?) with rail guns and infantry with tiberium beam weapons. A few battle scenes are reminiscent of what the player experienced but credit is being given to other characters which just doesnt sit right with me. I suppose it could be looked at as the view from one commander's experience alongside the game's player commander where some things line up but others still don't.

I just feel the book focused too much on little things but at the same time missed the mark on said little things. I realize it would be hard to write a novel on the same scale as an RTS game, especially with how the player was put into the game, but i feel it could have been done better.

The field of manufacturing engineering and technology continues to advance rapidly, transcending disciplines and driving economic growth. This challenging and broad topic has continued to incorporate new concepts at an increasing rate, making manufacturing a dynamic and exciting field of study. In preparing this fourth edition, our most important goal throughout has been to provide a comprehensive state-of-the-art textbook on manufacturing, which also encompasses the additional aims of motivating and challenging students.

About the Author

PROFESSOR SEROPE KALPAKJIAN has been teaching at the Illinois Institute of Technology since 1963. After graduating from Robert College (with High Honors), Harvard University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he joined Cincinnati Milacron, Inc., where he was a research supervisor in charge of advanced metal-forming processes. He has published numerous papers and is the author of several articles in encyclopedias and handbooks; he has also edited various volumes and serves on the editorial boards of several journals and the Encyclopedia Americana.

He is the author of three additional manufacturing books, two of which received the M. Eugene Merchant Manufacturing Textbook Award. He is a Life Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Fellow and Life Member of ASM International, and Fell of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, and is a full member (Emeritus) of the International Institution for Production Engineering Research (CIRP). He is a founding member and a past president of the North American manufacturing Research Institution.

Professor Kalpakjian has received several awards: Citation by the Forging Industry Educational and Research Foundation for best paper (1966); Citation by the Society of Carbide and Tool Engineers (1977); The "Excellence in Teaching Award" from the Illinois Institute of Technology (1970); the "Centennial Medallion" by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (1980); the International "Education Award" by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (1989); and the Albert Easton White Distinguished Teacher Award by the American Society for Metals International (2000).

Dr. Steven R. Schmid is an Associate Professor in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Notre Dame, where he teaches and conducts research in manufacturing, machine design, and tribology. As the Director of the Manufacturing Tribology Laboratory at the university, he oversees industry and governmentally funded research on a wide variety of manufacturing topics, including tribological issues in rolling, forging and sheet metal forming, polymer processing, medical device design and manufacture, and nanomechanics.

He received his Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology (with Honors) and Master's and Ph.D. degrees, both in Mechanical Engineering, from Northwestern University. Dr. Schmid is the recipient of a National Science Foundation CAREERS Award and an ALCOA Foundation Young Faculty Award. He has been a leading proponent for the integration of research and engineering education; NSF has sponsored workshops on this issue for which he has served as head of the steering committee.

He is the author of over thirty technical papers in various journals, has edited three conference proceedings, has co-authored "Fundamentals of Machine Elements," and has contributed two chapters to the CRC "Handbook of Modern Tribology." He serves on the Tribology Division Executive Committee of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and has held officer positions in the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and the Society of Tribology and Lubrication Engineers. He is a registered Professional Engineer an a Certified Manufacturing Engineer.

This is one of 2 books that captures the essence of a manufacturing management (or industrial engineering) engineering undergraduate degree- the other being an operations management text from Ray Wild, Nigel Slack, or Laurie Mullins. To help get an idea of what being a manufacturing engineer involves, prospective students should envision a dose of intense team & individual industry-based change projects, and striving globally competitive companies to add "seasoning" to these books. The broad `technology' contents are useful for industry veterans, consultants, and undergraduate students alike, as well as being a good starting point for researchers.

This stuff flat out works!

This book is excellent! It is well laid out and easy to follow. Implementing Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategies can get complex so it was nice to have a well structured step by step system to follow.

The first 35 pages or so of the book walk you through some basic SEO knowledge and store setup. I already had a store fully setup but I found a few things that I had overlooked...so I would recommend going through this section even if you already have your store setup. If you don't, then this pretty much walks your through everything you would need to know.

From there the book gets into a plethora of SEO strategies that are based upon researching what Google has said it looks for when indexing content. The author really makes things easy to understand even if you are not familiar with the concepts. There are also lots of images and flowcharts which I found very helpful when I started working on my store. I have a pretty good working knowledge of SEO but I still learned a lot from this section. There were at least 10 - 15 things that I was either not aware of or that I simply had not thought about doing. The overall plan is very thorough and well thought out. I wish I had this a year ago when I was first getting started with Shopify.

The final 50 pages of the book get into SEO tools and more advanced strategies such as reverse engineering competitor's websites. For me, this section was pure gold. There were countless tools that I had no idea even existed that can have a huge impact on your site's rankings. As with the rest of the book, everything is easy to follow with loads of images and flowcharts.

I would say this book is a must have for anyone who owns a Shopify store. I would have spent a ton of time and money figuring this stuff out on my own. I"m already seeing increases in my organic traffic from Google and even a few of the other lesser search engines like Bing and I'm not even completely finished implementing all of the strategies that the book covers. The book has paid for itself many times over with the increased sales that I'm seeing. This one has been a homerun for me.

Approachable for the first time!

I have been studying and trying to understand SEO for about 5 years now. It is a complex web of terminology, theory, and rules. Shopify Empire finally makes SEO approachable! I read this book first and foremost to try and better understand SEO and came away completely satisfied. What I did not see coming was how intrigued I would be by the Shopify commerce platform. Even though it was not my intent, I will likely build a Shopify platform at some point simply due to how well this books walks you through Shopify–step by step and screenshot by screenshot. The author has a deep understanding of how these things work and he artfully breaks each step down so that others may understand them too.
Well done and simply brilliant!

Great little book every Shopify store owner should read

This is a great little book - tells you what you need to know and what to do from a store owners point of view - it does not drown you with technical jargon. He does promote his own software tools but not in an overbearing selling way and he does give details of alternative tools.

About the Author
Bruce R. Smith is Dean's Professor of English and Professor of Dramatic Arts at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. He is the author of six books, including, most recently, Phenomenal Shakespeare (2010) and The Key of Green: Passion and Perception in Renaissance Culture (2009). A former president of the Shakespeare Association of America, he has served on the editorial boards of Borrowers and Lenders: The Journal of Shakespeare and Appropriation; PMLA; The Senses and Society; Shakespeare Quarterly; Shakespeare Studies; and Studies in English Literature. With Katherine Rowe, he has co-directed two projects related to The Cambridge Guide to the Worlds of Shakespeare under grants from the Digital Humanities Office of the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Guggenheim Foundation.

About the Author
Michael Day completed his doctorate degree at Stanford University and has taught middle and high-school art in California. A widely published author and researcher, Dr. Day is a recipient of the Manuel Barkan Award for published research from NAEA. He has served on national panels, editorial boards for national scholarly publications, and art museum boards. He was invited to the former Soviet Union in a scholarly exchange sponsored by the International Research and Exchanges Board, and in 1998 he was one of five scholars invited to Beijing in a delegation sponsored by the Getty Education Institute and the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. Dr. Day served as President of the NAEA from 1997 to 1999.

Al Hurwitz has taught at the elementary and secondary levels in Miami-Dade County, Florida. He was the Director of Visual and Performing Arts for Newton, Massachusetts schools and taught art education at Harvard University Graduate School of Education Ohio State University, Teacher's College, Columbia University, Brandeis University, and the Massachusetts College of Art. He has written, co-authored, or edited 12 books on art education and served on the United States Society for Education through Art (USSEA). He has also served on the planning committee of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

I love it! It is a wonderful addition to my class and is full of great examples from history of artists. It is a book I will keep and use for a long time, long after my Class is over!

Nice book but priced too high.

I've found much more helpful books at a much cheaper price. $184, too much. It's very informative, but better off spending the cash on multiple resources.
