John H. Fisher, the former President and Executive Director of The New Chaucer Society and of the Modern Language Association of America, is the author of The Importance of Chaucer and of The Emergence of Standard English. He is editor of The Complete Poetry and Prose of Geoffrey Chaucer and of An Anthology of Chancery English.

Mark Allen is the bibliographer of The New Chaucer Society, and the designer and moderator of The Chaucer Bibliography Online. With Bege K. Bowers, he edited Annotated Chaucer Bibliography, 1986-1996, which received the 2002-04 MLA Prize for a Distinguished Bibliography.

The Complete Canterbury Tales of Geoffrey Chaucer
Very few editions of the Canterbury Tales contain all of the tales Chaucer wrote, and most are in modern English rather than the original Middle English of Chaucer's day. This work, however, contains all the Tales that are extant, in Chaucer's own English, and with excellent notes and vocabulary information on Chaucer's words that are unlikely to be known or understood in the way they were meant when he used them. In addition to the portrayal of the age of Chaucer in the tales themselves, the notes add wonderful flavor to them by explaining aspects of Chaucer's society that are behind what he is saying in the tales themselves and in his descriptions of the pilgrims. All told, one gets a wonderful sense of Chaucer's wry wit and an understanding of his age and its concerns and foibles that a translation without such information can hardly provide.

Chaucer's Beautiful Tales Shall Live Forever

This edition of Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales" Edited by John Fisher & Mark Allen is truly the finest version I have ever come across. The Tales are rendered in the original Middle English. The book includes 4 wonderful illuminated manuscripts, three of which show the 'General Prologue' in beautifully crafted scribes traditional writing. The introductions and commentaries of the Editor's add greatly to the understanding and background of Chaucer's Tales. But the book gives the interested reader far more than that.

On every page of the book the Editors have included a double annotation. The first annotation at the bottom of each column is a specific word interpretation by line number of those words which would not commonly be recognized by the 21st Century American reader. This set of annotations assists the reader tremendously in understanding the words of a more archaic origin. But the fact that the Editors chose to include this annotation on a page by page basis, instead of at the end of the book in a glossary as is often done in other printings of the Tales, makes this version particularly readable and convenient. Yet the Editors did not stop there.

In a second set of page by page annotations, the Editors include at the bottom of each page again a line by line set of annotations which explain special interpretations, unusual facts and especially the names of towns today that relate to geographic references made within the Tales. The interpretations that are revealed in this second set of annotations makes the reading of the Tales a total pleasure, without making the reader refer to chapter notes at the back of the book. Rather, these notes are immediately accessible at the bottom of each page, allowing the reader immediate access to these special gems of information which the modern day reader would usually have no way of knowing.

As is usual, the Editors include line numbers every 5 lines throughout the text. Thus, matching the annotations with specific lines in the Tales is made as convenient as possible. The Editors are not shy about helping the reader interpret Chaucer's bawdy references, without being overly explicit in their language, yet completely conveying the meanings that Chaucer was making and the references to certain activities of people which are usually not elucidated in most books. Chaucer is without a doubt, the master of Middle English verse and through his vision and literary expertise, allows modern day readers to have a wonderful illustration of life in 14th Century England. I have never seen a better version of the Tales and I have read at least 4 different versions. Fisher and Allen's version is the most reader friendly by far. It is recommended to all students of Middle English and anyone who wishes to read the poetry of the undisputed master of Middle English.

Pay attention to the publisher and date!

Unfortunately there were a lot of problems with the Russian translation of this book. The translation initially published by Rosman was hastily made and had a number of errors. The most glaring errors were fixed in the later editions but some minor problems remained.

And a couple of years ago another publisher (Machaon) purchased the rights to the Harry Potter series and for some reason decided to use the amateur translation that circulated on the Internet. And while this translation is true to the source it's written in really poor Russian and I don't recommend it (or any other book of the series published by Machaon) to anyone due to this reason (especially to those who learn Russian).

So, if you want to buy the Russian translation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the best option is probably a newer edition (2007-2013) by Rosman (Росмэн). There are still plenty of them on Amazon - new and used. Or you may skip the first book entirely and go straight to the Chamber of Secrets (again, better find the Rosman edition).

Harry Potter makes it to Russia

I have been reading the Harry Potter novels for ages, and they will always be my favorite. I first read them in English two years ago, since of the two languages I know, English would have to be my better one. But last year, while visiting my family in Russia, I found and bought the translated version of books 1-4.
In my oppinion, the translation wasn't perfect, and not as good as it could have been. Nothing much was changed, but I found a strange loss of humor. I was more than surprised to find that my friends were also reading these books in Russia, and I'm happy with the translation since it's better than nothing. I suggest if you know or are learning Russian, and have read Harry Potter in another language, that you definately buy this book to compare. It's the first book in the series.

Very poor translation

I am a Russian-English translator, and a fan of the Harry Potter books. A friend gave me the Russian version of the first book, and I was quite interested to see how it went. To be blunt, it is poorly translated, and appears to be the result of the Russian publisher hoping to get something on the shelves as soon as possible. A great deal of Rowling's humor lies in her turns of phrase, and the translator made only half-hearted attempts to convey these, if he made the attempt at all. I frequently wondered about his grasp of the English language. Most baffling to me was that the translator changed Neville's pet toad into a turtle--but only on some pages. I cannot recommend this book even as a curiosity, since that would only encourage the publisher to continue putting out shoddy work.

About the Author
I.J. Parker was born and educated in Europe and turned to mystery writing after an academic career in the U.S. She published her short stories in Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine, winning the short story Shamus award in 2000. The Akitada novels, a series about an eleventh century Japanese nobleman/detective, now consists of fourteen titles, with a fifteenth to be released soon. The books are available in print, audio, and electronic formats. They have been translated into twelve languages. The short stories are available in electronic format. I.J. Parker is also the author of several historical novels set during the Heike Wars in twelfth century Japan, and of a historical thriller set in eighteenth century Europe.

liked it on the whole

liked it on the whole. glad there was another adventure. my two complaints are that the author spent too much time on the Akitada mystery and the dwarf and didn't have enough time to connect the Tora and Saburo mystery, or have them solve it, and she makes them out to be inept. she wrapped it up as an afterthought. should have finished the Akitada mystery earlier. once they found her kidnapped there was no mystery and what took two chapters to finish could have been done in one or a half.

I.J. Parker did it again with THE SHRING VIRGIN

If you were to ask the author she would be able to tell you when I became inthralled with her Akitada stories; but it's been quite a few years. The story lines capture my interest from the moment I read the first page, and have me wake in the night so I can get closer to the finish line.
The historical background at the end of the book is so interesting, and so much appreciated.
What makes her books so interesting, whatever is written in it, could very easily be translated into todays world; only upgraded in action, places, and crime solving.
I am getting started to read THE ASSASSIN'S DAUGHTER, and know it will hold my interest as have all the others.
ANY LIBRARY AND BOOKSTORE SHOULD HAVE HER BOOKS DISPLAYED IN A MANNER THAT WILL MAKE A READER GET HOOKED FROM THE COVER PAGE ALONE. Brilliant writing, that is all I have to say.

Lifelong favorite series!

I don't have time to read much so Im very picky and tend to stick with authors I like.
I love all the Akitada books and identify with the characters as an Asian American learning about how my heritage affects my personal culture. My only reservation stems from the main character's adaptation of very Western Christian and modern individualistic values, which I dont feel would be very successful in Heian Japan. It certainly creates more empathy, and possibly illustrates the internal struggles of a people that are unbelievably strong and selfless, bound by duty to country and rules of society.
My experience living in Japan was the most enriching and beautiful of my life. I saw the most gracious of humankind and learned how to appreciate beauty in the minutiae. The Akitada mysteries take me back with joy, and I return to them often.

But the lone green pickle sitting in the jar refuses to be eaten and flees the deli. Running down the street, it is followed by a peanut butter-and-jelly sandwich and other comestibles, all of which cry out, "Stop that pickle!" Inevitably, the other foodstuffs are devoured and the pickle allowed to continue its flight (why it's okay to eat, say, 17 toasted almonds but not a pickle remains a mystery). Shachat ( You Can't Catch Me ) contributes zany childlike art: the various snacks, personified with bulging eyes and short stubby legs, race across busy backgrounds. A hoot. Ages 4-8.

PreSchool-K-A pickle that doesn't want to be eaten tries to run away, and various other foods chase him. If your readers enjoy stories about food, this might interest them at first. The illustrations, however, will send them running. They're very poor imitations of Maira Kalman and Hendrik Drescher's styles, with none of the humor, care, or detail that characterize their respective works. The writing isn't involving or clever enough for a read-aloud, and the story lacks the development of similar tales such as Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith's The Stinky Cheese Man (Viking, 1992) or even the traditional Gingerbread Boy. Stop that purchase order.

Ages 5-8. This might be the kind of comic nightmare to expect after reading "The Gingerbread Man" on a full stomach. The last pickle in the jar at Adolph's Deli does not want to be eaten. It escapes and dashes through city streets, pursued by an ever-growing posse of food items that cry, "Stop that pickle!" Then, colliding with a hungry little boy, the pickle faces his moment of destiny. Luckily, the boy eats the pickle's pursuers and, unlike his less fortunate Gingerbread cousin, the devilish dill is once again on the lam. The infectious refrain, deadpan humor ("Everyone knows that a peanut butter and jelly sandwich is not the fastest sandwich in the world, but it does have great endurance"), and outlandish paintings of anthropomorphized sandwiches, pretzels, and almonds will appeal to youngsters with a taste for the offbeat. We took this book out of the library about a year ago. My 3 and 5 year old girls loved it. Every time we return to the library we take it out again at my 3 year old's request. I have recommended this book to more parents and love to tell them the story line. We are buying it today to free up the library copy. STOP THAT PICKLE!

Go, Pickle, GO!

I got this book on the recommendation of a friend who's a children's librarian. At the time, my son was only a year old. It quickly - try, immediately! - became his favorite. I thought it was rather silly at first, but his response was quick and positive, and pretty soon, we all were laughing over the antics of the Pickle and his pursuers! "Stop Pickle Please" my baby requests on a daily basis. Bedtime is not complete without reading it, and now he even anticipates us - as soon as we turn to the page where the pickle escapes, he cries, "Go, Pickle, GO!" and then "Eeeek!" (like Ms. Elmira Deeds!) and laughs at his own joke. And a few weeks ago, he even looked up from his lunch of peanut butter and jelly and said to me, "Peanut butter has great endurance" in his little baby voice - (he's almost 2 years now). I nearly fell in the floor - I couldn't believe it! This book is terrific, absolutely terrific. The children really get into it, and my son has learned a lot of interesting words and phrases! I highly, highly recommend this book for anyone with small children.

My kids (all four of them) love this book. And I never minded reading it again and again. I originally found it several years ago on the sale table of a local bookstore and could never find it again. Happy to see it is available. It is a family favorite.

Great book !

Since I am only a 1500 rated player I found this book to be very helpful and easy to understand. Even more important is the book is specific to pawn formations and the author walks you through the more common structures that come up in club/tournament play.

"DEDICATED TO ALL GOD'S HANDCRAFTED GIFTS... HIS CHILDREN"

DESIGNED BY GOD SO I MUST BE SPECIAL is a colorful, positive book that will truly make your child feel special and build his/her self confidence.
My daughter really loves the pictures and hearing about how God blessed her with so many gifts that we as adults may sometimes take for granted (our sense of sight, hearing, touching and smelling [taste was not included] and more.) This is really a 4 1/2 star book only because God's name is mentioned only on the cover, dedication page (above title) and the first page of the book. The rest of the pages start with "HE", however, this is easily remedied. When I read it to my daughter I just add "GOD" to each page and it works perfectly. In my opinion that is the only flaw in the book.
If I am running late putting my daughter to bed, I've found that the story is just as charming if I read only the first paragraph on each page (it has 3.) Also DESIGNED BY GOD SO I MUST BE SPECIAL is a great training tool to teach your child objects from the book. I say "where's the: flower, butterfly, cloud, dog, cat, bunny, frog, fish, rainbow, bird, bees, bed, bathtub, sun, tree," etc. and my daughter will search for the object and point to it.
I must include the last page of the book for you so you'll know what you are missing if you don't own this:
"HE GAVE ME MY SPIRIT SO THAT I COULD KNOW THAT HE'S ALWAYS BESIDE ME EVERY PLACE THAT I GO.
TO LOVE ME, PROTECT ME, TO SHOW ME THE WAY, TO BE THERE IN HARD TIMES AS WELL AS EACH DAY.

This was one of the very first books my now 3 year old daughter received when she was born. We have read it to her almost every night since. She loves it! Now she's pretty much memorized it. I buy it for everyone I know who is having a baby.

People can be so ridicoulous......

In response to people ranting about the "caucasion" edition......So would it be better if the book was only available in one edition with only caucasion children in the picture? I think the point was that the book is meant to be personal and about "me", so the publisher offered the book in 2 editions so that African American children would not be looking at pictures of children with white skin and wondering why the picture doesn't match up. Are you that small-minded that you couldn't see that? I think to offer books in only one edition is the true diservice. The story is not different, just the color of the children. Get it?

A truely wonderful book, for all children. BTW- you can find this book in both editions through Amazon.

A great help to my wife

A great help to my wife, who is refreshing her high school German. Harry Potter translations are the most fun way to learn a new language! We also have the audio version in German, and (what is essential) the British version of the original novel, which seems to be the text from which all the translations are done. The American version would no doubt work, but would be inexact in some paragraphs and sentences.

What can I say? Harry Potter is a good book. I'm using it to work on my German vocabulary, and it's much preferable to chugging through a dry german text.
The artwork is lacking compared to my American copy, but I didn't buy it for the artwork. :)

Great learning tool.

My interest is not in Harry Potter as a story (although it is excellent). This is in regard to using the German translation (along with the Audible books recording) to kick-start some moribund language skills. And for that purpose, it is fantastic. I only wish these tools had been available a couple of decades ago.
