About the Author

Laurence Whistler was born in 1912. He is perhaps best known today for his glass engraving, but was also a renowned poet and the author of many books, including The English Festivals and The Initials in The Heart. In 1974 he was awarded the C.B.E. and in 2000, shortly before his death, a knighthood.

I love the writing of Laurence Whistler who has, here, set out to write ‘a guide to the festivals of England as they are and as they might be’. I think the result is a sparkling, almost poetic (and very revealing) look at the ancient holidays of England. It gave me lots of ideas for Christmas and Halloween and I shall be returning for all the other seasonal festivals!

I've just bought this book on Kindle because I have the hard cover edition of 1948, and refer to it extensively while writing - and who wants to take notes and mark up an antique?
It's an excellent book, covering the following festivals: The Growth of English Christmas, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day, Twelfth Day, Plough Sunday & Monday, Candlemas, St. Valentine's Day, Shrove Tuesday, Mothering Sunday, All Fool's Day, Palm Sunday & Good Friday, Easter, St. George's Day, May Day, Rogationtide, Whitsun, Midsummer Day, Lammas, The Harvest, Michaelmas Day, All Hallows Eve, Guy Fawkes Day, and St. Cecilia's Day. It also covers the "Wheel of Life" - Christenings, Weddings & Birthdays. The appendixes cover dates of the movable festivals until 1975, and carols.
I would recommend it to anyone interested in the history behind the English festivals!

This book considers medieval texts that deal with ancient theater as documents of Latin Christianity's intellectual history. As an exercise in medieval historiography, this study also examines biases in modern scholarship that seek links between these texts and performance practices. The effort to bring these texts together and place them in their intellectual contexts reveals a much more nuanced and contested discourse on Greco-Roman theater and medieval theatrical practice than has been acknowledged. The book is arranged chronologically and shows the medieval foundations for the Early Modern integration of dramatic theory and theatrical performance.

The Idea of the Theater in Latin Christian Thought will be of interest to theater historians, intellectual historians, and those who work on points of contact between the European Middle Ages and Renaissance. The broad range of documents discussed (liturgical treatises, scholastic commentaries, philosophical tracts, and letters spanning many centuries) renders individual chapters useful to philosophers, aestheticians, and liturgists as well as to historians and historiographers. For theater historians, this study offers an alternative reading of familiar texts which may alter our understanding of the emergence of dramatic and theatrical traditions in the West. About the Author
Dr. Gary A. Porter earned M.B.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Colorado. Dr. Porter taught at several universities, including San Diego State; Loyola University Chicago; and the University of Montana; and has served as a department chair. He is currently Distinguished Lecturer at Drake University. Widely published and the recipient of numerous teaching awards, Dr. Porter has conducted workshops on introductory accounting education and corporate financial reporting, has worked as a staff accountant with Deloitte & Touche, and has actively served the Illinois CPA Society, American Accounting Association, and Financial Executives International.

Dr. Curtis L. Norton received his Ph.D. from Arizona State University and an M.B.A. from the University of South Dakota. He is currently Clinical Professor of Accounting at Arizona State University. As Professor of Accounting at Northern Illinois University for more than 30 years, Dr. Norton earned the University Excellence Teaching Award and has published in THE ACCOUNTING REVIEW, THE JOURNAL OF ACCOUNTING EDUCATION, CPA JOURNAL, as well as other journals. A member of the American Accounting Association and Financial Executives International, he also consults and conducts training for private and governmental authorities, banks, and utilities.

Most schools want APA 6th edition formats and the examples were still in MLA if any. The reading is dry with few examples that help beginners understand the terms and subject matter. I found better sources online.
