Forgotten Victory: First Canadian Army and the Cruel Winter of 1944-45, by Mark Zuehlke

During the winter of 1944–45, the western Allies desperately sought a strategy that would lead to Germany’s quick defeat. After much rancorous debate, the Allied high command decided that First Canadian Army would launch the pivotal offensive to win the war—an attack against the Rhineland, an area of Germany on the west bank of the Rhine. Winning this land would give them a launching point for crossing the river and driving into Germany’s heartland. This was considered the road to victory. For those who fought, the names of battlegrounds such as Moyland Wood and the Hochwald Gap would forever call up memories of uncommon heroism, endurance and tragic sacrifice. Their story is one largely lost to the common national history of World War II. Forgotten Victory gives this important legacy back to Canadians.

He effortlessly combines the source materials, helping bring the reader into the heart of the action...Zuehlke's respect and admiration for the soldiers resonates as he details the sacrifices that led to victory and the war's end less than two months later. His powerful combination of fact and emotion in Forgotten Victory will help Canadians better understand and remember the dedication of the young men and women who served." Outstanding Book on "Unknown Battles" from September 1944-March 1944 where Allies took 1/2 of all Casualties on Western Front!
By Daniel P. Kneeland
Mark Zuehlke has done another masterful, well-researched and written book on the Unknown Battles of the Canadian 1st Army for The Mass-Wahl and Reichswald Forest from December 1944-March 1945!
Publishers, Authors and Historians are finally starting to realize that Readers are "somewhat bored" with Thousands of Books on D-Day, Arnhem, The 1st 10 Days of The Battle of The Bulge and Remagen and want to read about The Bloodiest Battle of the Western Front in World War II-The Rhineland.
The U.S Army, alone, took 240,000 Battle Casualties from September 15, 1944 to March 21, 1945 or 3 times as many Battle Casualties as The Battle of The Bulge with 81,000 Battle Casualties 2 1/2 times as many Battle Casualties 105,000 Battle Casualties for the Ardennes-Alsace Campaign if you include the Unknown Battle of the Saar, Siegfried Line and Upper Rhine in Northern Alsace where the U.S 7th Army had 21,000 Battle Casualties in the Siegfried Line and Operation Nordwind alone from December 16, 1944 to January 25, 1945 and 70,000 Battle Casualties in Northeastern France from September 1944 to March 1945 and the U.S 6th Army Group sustained 110,000 Battle Casualties in The Rhineland Campaign in Alsace.
So, Publishers, Authors and Researchers should continue to do Exhaustive Research, Writing and Publishing of The Battles of The Schedlt Estuary, The Maas-Wahl Rivers (minus more than a sub-chapter synopsis of The Battle for Arnhem), The Siegfried Line and Roer River, The Battle of Lorraine and The Battle of Alsace from September 1944 to March 1945 or the "Campaign for The Rhine River" which took almost 50% of All Battle Casualties taken by the United States, British, Canadian and French and Commonwealth Countries from D-Day June 6, 1944 to V-E Day May 8, 1945 with only 1 sub-chapter for Arnhem, The 1st 10 Days of The Battle of The Bulge (I was thrilled that Rickard in "Advance and Destroy" and Bergstrom in "The Ardennes" researched and wrote large portions of Their Books on The Battle of The Bulge from December 27, 1944 to January 25, 1945 where the Americans suffered 55% of The Battle Casualties incurred during The Entire Ardennes Battle clearing the Germans from Belgiam).
So, Highly Detailed Books on the Campaigns of the British 21st Army Group in The Scheldte Estuary, The Maas-Wahl Rivers, and The Siegfried Line and Rhineland and the U.S 6th Army Group in Alsace and The Vosges and Saar-Palatinate are greatly appreciated!
Five Stars to Author Mark Zuehlke in "Forgotten Victory" an "Unknown and Strategic Victory of World War II"! Sincerely, Daniel P. Kneeland, Grafton, Ma.
